Chapter 32-1

450 Words

Chapter 32 After Vivian has left, I process the last few hours by pacing around the living room. Vivian has emailed me Leila’s new chapters. I’m still too afraid to read them. Too afraid that I will feel as though Leila has violated my trust too deeply. Or maybe that’s just another story I’m telling myself. Maybe what I’m really afraid of is to see, in black and white, another person’s account of the last ten years of my life—a person I happen to care a great deal about. I ask Harry to fix me a strong drink while I print out the pages. Then I settle into the chair Bruce and Leila have spent so much time in while they listened to the story of my life, and I read what Leila has written. It’s not as bad as Vivian storming into my house asking me whether I was suicidal would have suggested.
