When My Alpha Came Looking

912 Words
The scent hit Ava before the sound did. Sharp. Familiar. Unmistakable. Alpha Kael Blackwood. Her entire body went rigid. Even though the mate bond between them had been severed, something deep inside her still reacted to his presence. Old instincts. Old memories. Lucien noticed immediately. His silver eyes narrowed slightly. “They’re close,” he said calmly. Ava turned toward the dark forest behind her. Her heart started racing as faint footsteps and the rustling of leaves grew louder. They were moving quickly. Tracking her. Her stomach twisted. Why was Kael coming after her now? He had already rejected her. Banished her. What more did he want? Lucien watched her quietly. “You still care about him.” The words were not accusing. Just observant. Ava’s jaw tightened. “No.” But the hesitation in her voice betrayed her. Lucien didn’t comment further. Instead, his attention shifted toward the approaching wolves. Moments later, three large wolves burst through the trees. They shifted instantly into their human forms. Warriors of the Blackwood Pack. And right behind them— Kael stepped out from the darkness. Ava’s breath caught. He looked exactly the same. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair slightly messy from running through the forest. But his eyes… Those piercing blue eyes locked onto her immediately. For a brief moment, something flashed across his face. Relief. Then it vanished. Replaced by his usual cold expression. “Ava.” Her name sounded different coming from him now. Distant. Like it no longer belonged to her. Ava crossed her arms defensively. “What do you want?” The warriors glanced between them nervously. They had clearly not expected to find her standing beside another Alpha. Kael’s gaze slowly moved from Ava to Lucien. The moment he noticed the silver eyes, his expression darkened. “Lucien Nightfall.” Lucien remained completely relaxed. “Kael Blackwood.” The tension between them was immediate. Heavy. Like two predators silently measuring each other. Kael stepped forward. “You are in my territory.” Lucien raised an eyebrow slightly. “And yet your rogues were attacking a lone wolf.” “They are not my rogues.” “No?” Lucien’s voice remained calm. “Then your border control is poor.” One of Kael’s warriors growled quietly. Kael lifted a hand slightly, silencing him. His eyes moved back to Ava. “You shouldn’t be out here alone.” Ava let out a short laugh. “Really?” Her voice carried sharp bitterness. “You threw me out of the pack yourself.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “I had reasons.” “Oh, I’m sure you did.” The air between them became colder. Lucien watched the exchange silently. His gaze flickered between the two of them. Then he spoke. “She isn’t alone.” Kael’s eyes snapped toward him. “What?” Lucien’s voice remained steady. “Ava is under my protection now.” The words landed heavily. The warriors looked shocked. Kael’s gaze slowly returned to Ava. “What does that mean?” Ava hesitated. The mate bond between her and Lucien pulsed faintly again. Lucien answered for her. “It means she will be coming with me.” Kael’s eyes darkened dangerously. “You think you can just take a member of my pack?” Lucien tilted his head slightly. “Former member.” The correction hit harder than a punch. Ava watched Kael closely. For the first time since he appeared, his expression cracked slightly. Just for a second. Lucien continued calmly. “You rejected her.” Kael didn’t respond. “You banished her.” Still silence. Lucien’s silver eyes gleamed faintly. “You gave up any claim you had.” The forest seemed to hold its breath. Kael’s gaze shifted slowly back to Ava. Something unreadable flickered in his eyes. “Is this true?” he asked quietly. Ava blinked. “What?” “Are you going with him?” The question caught her off guard. Why did he care? He had already made it clear she meant nothing to him. “You made your choice,” Ava said softly. “So now I’m making mine.” Kael stared at her for a long moment. His jaw clenched tightly. Then his eyes suddenly narrowed. His gaze moved to Lucien again. And this time, there was something darker in it. Something dangerous. “You said she was under your protection.” Lucien nodded once. “Correct.” Kael’s voice dropped lower. “Why?” Lucien didn’t hesitate. “Because she’s my mate.” The forest went completely silent. The warriors looked stunned. Kael didn’t move. Didn’t blink. For a long moment, he simply stared at Ava. Like he was trying to process what he just heard. Then suddenly— The ground beneath them trembled. A powerful wave of Alpha energy exploded from Kael. His wolf was furious. “That’s impossible.” Lucien remained unmoved. “Rare,” he said calmly. “But not impossible.” Kael’s eyes burned with disbelief. His gaze snapped back to Ava. “You feel it too?” Ava hesitated. Her wolf stirred inside her again. The truth sat heavy in her chest. Slowly… She nodded. The moment she did— Kael’s expression changed completely. The calm Alpha mask cracked. And something far more dangerous appeared underneath. Because the man who had rejected her only hours ago had just realized something horrifying. He had rejected his mate. And somehow… She had found another one.
