The valley had no birds.
No wind.
No life.
Even the moonlight refused to touch the cursed land.
Aurelia stood at the edge of the Valley of Forgotten Souls, wrapped in a black cloak. Against Lucien's wishes, she had come—not alone, but with Lucien, Seraphine, Darius, and a small company of Shadow Guards concealed among the ancient ruins.
"I don't like this," Seraphine whispered, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword.
Lucien scanned the valley, his crimson eyes glowing.
"We're already expected."
A sudden laugh echoed through the darkness.
The sound came from everywhere.
And nowhere.
Then, the earth trembled.
Black mist coiled upward, revealing Morgana Bloodrose standing atop a broken stone altar.
"You came," she said, smiling.
"I knew compassion would bring you here."
Aurelia stepped forward.
"I came to end this."
Morgana laughed.
"No, Shadow Queen."
"You came to learn the truth."
She raised her hand.
The ground split open.
From beneath the altar rose twelve towering stone pillars engraved with forgotten runes. Each pillar held the chained spirit of an ancient Alpha King, their ghostly eyes fixed on Aurelia.
Lucien's expression hardened.
"The Twelve Guardians..."
"I thought they had been destroyed."
"They weren't destroyed," Morgana replied.
"They were imprisoned... waiting for their true ruler."
The spirits bowed their heads toward Aurelia.
A golden light burst from the Shadow Crown upon her head.
The valley shook.
Aurelia staggered as another vision overwhelmed her.
She saw Nyxara standing beside a young Lucien.
Not as strangers.
Not as enemies.
As allies.
Then she saw the Moon Goddess descending from the heavens, demanding that Nyxara surrender the power of the Shadow Flame.
When Nyxara refused, war erupted.
The Shadow Kingdom had not started the war.
It had defended itself.
The vision shattered.
Aurelia opened her eyes, tears glistening on her cheeks.
"They lied..."
Lucien nodded.
"History buried the truth."
Before another word could be spoken, Morgana clapped her hands.
The sky darkened.
A monstrous roar split the heavens.
The seal beneath the Obsidian Throne had finally broken.
Far away, a pillar of black light erupted into the sky.
"The Hollow King..." Seraphine whispered.
Lucien drew his sword.
"We're too late."
The ground beneath the valley collapsed.
Dark hands reached upward, dragging warriors into the abyss.
Shadow Guards fought desperately, but the creatures multiplied with every heartbeat.
Aurelia summoned silver-black flames that swept across the battlefield, freeing trapped soldiers.
For the first time, she fought as the Shadow Queen.
Her wolf emerged in full glory.
Massive.
Black as midnight.
Silver markings glowed across her body like living constellations.
Golden eyes burned with unyielding resolve.
The enemy recoiled.
Even Morgana took a step backward.
"So..." she whispered.
"You've awakened completely."
Lucien transformed beside Aurelia.
His colossal black wolf towered over the battlefield, crimson eyes blazing.
Together they charged into the darkness.
Shadow and flame moved as one.
The battle raged across the valley.
Ghosts screamed.
Mountains cracked.
The heavens themselves seemed to tremble beneath the clash of ancient powers.
Then...
Everything stopped.
A single figure emerged from the swirling darkness.
Tall.
Clad in armor forged from black crystal.
A crown of broken bones rested upon his head.
His eyes were endless voids.
The Hollow King.
His gaze settled on Aurelia.
At first...
He smiled.
Then, to everyone's astonishment...
He slowly knelt.
Silence fell across the battlefield.
Lucien's face drained of color.
"No..."
The Hollow King's voice echoed like a thousand souls speaking at once.
"My Queen..."
"I have waited an eternity for your return."
Aurelia stepped back.
"I am not your queen."
The creature's smile widened.
"You simply do not remember."
Before anyone could react, the Shadow Crown on Aurelia's head began to glow fiercely.
Ancient symbols appeared across her arms.
A hidden memory surfaced.
She wasn't merely Nyxara's heir.
She was connected to Nyxara in a way no prophecy had revealed.
The valley was consumed by blinding light.
When the light faded...
Morgana was gone.
The Hollow King had vanished.
Only a single black crystal remained where he had knelt.
Lucien picked it up.
His expression turned grim.
"He escaped."
Aurelia looked toward the crimson horizon.
"This isn't over."
"No," Lucien replied.
"It's only beginning."
Far beyond the known kingdoms, beyond seas untouched by mortal ships, a colossal obsidian gate slowly opened.
Countless glowing eyes awakened in the darkness beyond.
A cloaked figure stepped forward, holding an ancient scroll bearing Aurelia's name.
"The First Seal has fallen," the stranger whispered.
"The Shadow Queen has returned."
One by one, unseen rulers emerged from the darkness.
"The time has come," one declared.
"Prepare the Black Dominion."
The obsidian gate creaked wider.
An army unlike any the world had ever seen began to march.
And somewhere, hidden among the stars, an unseen woman watched the world below.
She smiled.
"The final game has begun."
