24 PATRICK In the days since Goldie apologized, not much had changed. Sure, my coworkers were talking to me again, and Goldie was trying to be herself, but I couldn’t let go of it all. I was still too hurt, and I couldn’t imagine letting go of that pain and being okay with it all. Which meant I had to tell my family I would be moving. I didn’t know where I was going to go yet, but I had to leave. I wouldn’t go too far so I could visit them often, but I couldn’t stand being in the same small town as Goldie or working the same job as her and the people who believed I was capable of the things they accused me of. Since it was July Fourth weekend, we all got together Thursday night for dinner. My niece and nephews played and danced for us. Mom was smiling and laughing and looking like hers
