CHAPTER 5
ALIBI.
Chloe’s point of view.
The entire hall fell silent. Every pair of eyes widened in shock— including mine. He turned toward me, and the moment those steel-gray eyes met mine, a chill raced down my spine. I felt like I was about to melt. I forgot how to breathe. Every gaze in the hall darted between us.
He walked forward with a confidence that needed no permission. Each step was slow, deliberate, and dangerous.
My eyes swept over him carefully. He was well over six feet tall, with broad shoulders that stretched the fabric of his black shirt. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing intricate tattoos. His hair looked carelessly messy, as if he’d run a hand through it on his way here. And then there were his eyes—perfect, stormy gray, cold yet strangely captivating.
For a moment, everything else disappeared. It was just those intense gray eyes pinning me in place. The corner of his lips lifted into the smallest, most infuriating smirk, like he knew exactly what I was thinking. Heat rushed to my cheeks the moment I realized he was smiling at me.
“C-Chase…” the chancellor stammered, shooting to his feet so quickly his chair scraped loudly against the floor. “W-When did you get back?”
The entire disciplinary committee stood up with him. Even the coach looked stunned. ‘Do they know him?’
Chase slipped one hand into his pocket, looking completely unbothered by the attention. “A few days ago,” he replied lazily. “I would’ve announced my grand return, but I figured the fireworks could wait until my girlfriend is cleared of all accusations.”
He glanced at me, then looked away. The chancellor blinked rapidly struggling to recover, The committee members exchanged hurried whispers before one of them finally cleared his throat.
“So, Mr. Bennett,” the man said carefully, “you’re claiming Miss Parker was with you all night and was never at the bar?”
Chase whipped around to face them. “Is that your way of asking for the details of everything we did last night when the lights were off?” A wicked smirk tugged at his lips. “I can go on and on about just how sweaty the night was.”
Gasps rippled through the crowd,my cheeks burn ‘He has completely lost his mind’
He caught my horrified expression and, instead of correcting himself, winked at me.
The chancellor looked mortified. “That won't be necessary, Chase.”
He turned back to me. “So, Miss Parker… can you confirm that you were with Chase last night and not at the bar?”
The silence that followed was somehow louder than the gasps earlier.
“Come on, babe…” Chase flashed me a charming smile, his voice teasing. “Go ahead and tell them. Don’t worry, you don’t need to go into details. We don’t kiss and tell.”
I hesitated for a second, I didn't know this man but I knew my scholarship and future were on the line.
“Yes,” I said, my voice steadier than I had expected. “I was with him last night.”
A satisfied smile spread across Chase’s face while whispers exploded around us. I glanced over at Becca and Scott. Both of them still had their eyes wide with shock.
The gavel slammed down. The chancellor stood. “I’m sorry for the inconvenience, Miss Parker. You’re cleared and free to go.”
Chase’s smile deepened. He strolled toward me and, without asking, stretched out his hand. “Come on, Sunshine.”
Everyone was watching, so I quickly slipped my hand into his. He gave it a gentle squeeze, then leaned down to whisper, “Everyone’s watching. If we’re going to sell this little fairy tale, at least give them a believable ending.” His smile never faltered. “A kiss on the cheek.”
My brows knitted together. I hesitated for a moment, but when I glanced sideways, I caught Scott glaring at me with a deep, disgusted frown. Perfect timing.
Slowly, I leaned in. The rich, masculine scent of his cologne filled my nose as I pressed a soft kiss to his cheek.
A sharp gasp rippled through the room.
Chase covered my hand with his and quietly ushered me out. Just before we crossed the doorway, he leaned closer, his warm breath brushing my ear. “Keep your head up, Sunshine,” he whispered teasingly. “And try not to look like you’re being kidnapped.”
We finally stopped in front of a sleek sports car. He opened the door for me. The moment I slipped inside, he shut it with a solid thud.
My cheeks were burning, but I forced myself to stay calm. This is crazy. I had just played the girlfriend of a man I didn’t even know. I didn’t know his full name, yet here I was pretending to be his girl.
‘Damn it, Chloe. What the f**k were you thinking?’
After a twenty-minute drive far away from prying eyes, he finally parked and turned off the ignition. I spun toward him so fast I nearly gave myself whiplash. “Let’s start with an explanation of what the hell happened there.”
His lips curved into a smile. “Is that any way to talk to someone who just saved your life?”
I scoffed. “That’s not a real answer.”
“Well, it’s the only one you’re getting.”
“Then I’ll go back in there and tell them the truth—”
“You sure about that?” His gaze dropped slowly, deliberately, giving me time to react as it drifted down to my cleavage.
I couldn't help swallowing down.
“See?” He smirked. “We both know you won’t go back in there and say a word.”
God, I hate that smirk on his face right now.
“I—” The words died in my throat.
“Your pupils are dilated,” he continued, his voice dropping lower, “and your breathing is shallow. I bet your heart is racing too.”
I looked away. f**k him for being right.
“That doesn’t mean anything,” I managed, but my voice came out breathy and weak.
“Doesn’t it?” He shifted in his seat to face me fully. “We looked good together there. We want the same thing. All we have to do is put on a show for everyone and make them believe what happened back there was real. Then we make both of them regret it.”
“Both of them?” I echoed.
“Yeah. Becca and Scott.”
“I don’t have any problem with Becca.”
“Well, I do.” The playful laugh faded as he sat up straighter. “I have a problem with both of them.”
I blinked. “What is it? If we’re going to do this, then I deserve to know. Tell me…why do you hate them?”
