Chapter 7: Unwritten Protocol

The proximity was suffocating, yet every nerve ending in Maya's body felt hyper-sensitized, humming with an awareness that defied every rule she had ever set for herself. Julian's hand remained close, his fingers brushing against the dossier she held as a barrier between their chests. The faint amber glow of the Lagos skyline cast long, dramatic shadows across the polished oak floor, wrapping the high-rise office in an intimate, secluded world of their own. "You're testing me," Maya whispered, her voice barely louder than the hum of the air conditioning unit. She refused to look away, forcing herself to meet the dark, unreadable intensity of his gaze, even as her pulse hammered erratically against her ribs. "You throw extra files, impossible deadlines, and late-night audits our way just to see who breaks first." Julian didn't deny it. Instead, a slow, predatory smirk touched the corner of his lips, a look of calculated confidence that made him look both dangerously attractive and infuriatingly composed. "I don't test people to see if they break, Maya," Julian murmured, his voice dropping an octave lower, wrapping around her senses like velvet. "I test them to see what it takes to make them yield. And so far, you haven't yielded. You push back." "Someone has to," she countered, her chin lifting defiantly. "If everyone in this firm just nods and smiles at whatever arbitrary demands you drop on their desks, the entire department would collapse under the weight of your ego." A low, resonant sound rumbled in Julian's chest—a genuine laugh that surprised them both. The stiffness in his broad shoulders eased just a fraction, though the heat between them only intensified. "My ego," he repeated, tasting the words with a slow, deliberate cadence. He shifted closer, closing the final inch of space so that the fabric of his white shirt brushed lightly against her blazer. His gaze dipped momentarily to her lips before flashing back up to lock onto her eyes. "Careful, Miss Sterling. Insubordination of that caliber usually comes with a heavy penalty." "Is that a threat, Mr. Vance?" Maya challenged, though her breath hitched sharply as Julian slowly raised one hand, his fingers hovering just a millimeter away from her cheek before tucking a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. The feather-light touch sent a violent jolt of electricity straight down her spine, making her knees feel entirely untrustworthy. "It's a warning," Julian whispered, his face inches from hers, the clean scent of sandalwood and expensive cedarwood completely overwhelming her thoughts. "Next time you decide to storm into my office after hours to argue about a workflow, you won't be holding that file as a shield." Before Maya could formulate a reply—before she could decide whether to push him away or lean into the magnetic pull dragging her forward—the harsh, bright flash of her phone screen suddenly lit up inside her satchel, shattering the heavy, electric spell in an instant. Julian pulled back slowly, his jaw tightening as the corporate armor snapped back into place. But the dark, smoldering look in his eyes promised that the conversation was far from over. "Your phone is buzzing, Miss Sterling," he said smoothly, turning his back toward the floor-to-ceiling windows with a dismissive wave of his hand. "Review the logistics framework by tomorrow morning. We're done here." Maya stood frozen for a second, her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath. Without another word, she turned and practically fled from the office, her mind spinning wildly. The midnight clause was no longer just a figure of speech; it was a trap she was walking into willingly
