Chapter 8: Aftermath and Ambition

538 Words
The crisp evening air of Lagos hit Maya like a splash of cold water as she stepped out of the high-rise and walked briskly toward the street to hail a cab. Her heart was still hammering a erratic rhythm against her ribs, and the phantom heat of Julian’s fingers near her cheek felt branded onto her skin. She climbed into the back of a yellow taxi, giving her Satellite Town address with a distracted nod, her mind refusing to detach from the dark, magnetic intensity of the executive suite. By the time she unlocked her apartment door and dropped her satchel onto the couch, the adrenaline had faded, leaving behind a heavy, bone-deep exhaustion. Yet sleep felt entirely out of reach. She changed into a loose cotton t-shirt, pulled her hair up into a messy bun, and sat at her small dining table with her laptop glowing brightly in the dark room. Julian’s words echoed relentlessly in her head: “We aren't surviving, Miss Sterling. We're building something.” He wasn't just talking about the regional logistics framework or quarterly spreadsheets. He was talking about control, power, and an undeniable chemistry that neither of them knew how to regulate. Maya opened the document, her fingers hovering over the keyboard. She knew the risks. Sandra had warned her about the shark tank, and her own common sense screamed that mixing professional survival with a volatile attraction to her boss was a recipe for disaster. But as she looked at the blinking cursor on her screen, a strange defiance settled over her. She wasn't going to let him intimidate her into backing down. The next morning, the third-floor office was already alive with its usual chaotic energy by the time Maya walked through the glass doors. She wore a sharp, tailored emerald green dress that commanded attention, her posture rigid and deliberate. Tucked securely under her arm was the finalized logistics framework, revised down to every last decimal point just as he had demanded. As she crossed the open-plan area toward her desk, she noticed Sandra watching her with a raised eyebrow and a knowing smirk. "You look entirely too put together for someone who reportedly spent last evening in a staring contest with the most ruthless director in the firm," Sandra whispered, leaning over her partition as Maya settled into her chair. "I like to keep my work organized, Sandra," Maya replied smoothly, keeping her voice light. "Right. Organized," Sandra chuckled softly. "Just a heads-up—word is that Vance has been in his office since six this morning chewing out the compliance team. If you're planning on handing over those summaries anytime soon, brace yourself." Maya gave a confident nod, though a familiar, electric flutter sparked in her stomach. She checked her watch. It was barely 8:30 AM. She didn't wait for an invitation or an intercom summons this time. She gathered the folder, rose from her desk, and walked with measured, steady steps straight down the executive corridor. When she reached Julian’s door, she didn't hesitate. She gave two sharp raps against the frosted glass and pushed it open, stepping into the quiet sanctuary of the corner office before he even had a chance to look up.
