The warehouse in the morning was different from the warehouse at night. The light came in differently, lower and more direct, picking out the textures of the concrete and the salvaged shelving and the surface of the canvas in a way the artificial light she worked by at night didn't replicate. She used the morning light for assessment. For standing back and looking at what she had actually made rather than what she intended to make. She stood in front of the canvas for a long time. The black was right. She had known it was right the night she finished it but the morning confirmed it, the specific quality of it, the depth that wasn't just darkness but the absence of light in a way that had its own presence.
