Chapter 2. KAT

1283 Words
I was being a b***h and I knew it. Watching my mum and Max prepare for this nonsense party as I sat at the kitchen table. It was just the three of us at home, our dad lived in Australia and had since I was a child. It meant we hardly saw him, or spoke to him which was fine by me. My mum was lugging around cans of beer, her dark hair on the top of her head. "Are you going to help?" Max looked at me. "Why? I’m not invited, if I remember correctly," I said with an open mouth. "Why would I want a boring as f**k like you at my party anyway?!" "Max”It was mum and I gave him a smirk. "You two seriously need to sort it the f**k out. You are far too old for this s**t and you both need to remember you can be removed from my house at any time." I was watching mum as she spoke. She was pissed. I always believed my mum was pretty cool. She had loads of tattoo’s, swore constantly and supported me and Kane on anything. She had been a single parent since Max was born and she had worked hard. She had a good job and we have a beautiful house, I don’t really know how she even began to do it. I couldn’t do it and I had no kids. "Mum, Kat is a miserable b***h and she’s doing my head in." Max spoke quickly. "Mum, Max is a w***e who is upset that I ruin his street cred." I looked over at him. "Kat is a jealous slag because she has no friends, or no career or no boyfriend," Max spat out at me. Ouch, that actually hurt. "f**k you!" I shouted at him, my voice breaking as I ran up the stairs. "Kat!" He called after me as I slammed my bedroom door. I collapsed on my bed, kicking my legs in frustration. Max was such a d**k and I f*****g hated him. Mum was right, we were too old for bullshit childish arguments but not only were we completely different in every single way, we just pissed each other off, everyday, all the f*****g time. I had my hands over my eyes, figuring what to do with my life. "Kat," the voice was my mums. "What?" I reaponded, looking over as the door opened. "Ignore your brother," she said quietly. "You know he can be a d**k," she finished and I chuckled lightly. "He is right though, I have no life or no friends so maybe I am jealous." "You have plenty of friends, what is Alice doing tonight?" Mum asked me, plenty of friends, yeah? One. "She’s on a date with some dude, I don’t know." I closed my eyes. "I’m sure Max won’t mind you coming to his party." I scoffed at my mum's words. Great Friday night. "I don’t want to hang around with a bunch of twenty year olds, thanks mother." I turned my back to her. "Luke will be here. He is your age and it’s only three years." "Hmmm," I mumbled out, over this conversation. I put my pillow over my head, trying to keep my tears in. "Okay, if you change your mind." I heard my mum say, my bedroom door closing. I pressed the pillow tighter over my head, trying to ignore the sounds of the setting up downstairs. I really don’t know how me and Max’s paths went so differently. We were brought up exactly the same, we went to the same schools and had the same influences in our lives. Maybe he was just smarter than me. I was meant to go to university but I didn’t get the results I needed and chose to take a gap year instead. That was obviously four years ago, now I was stuck in the worst rut of all time and had no clue what to do with my life. My door knocked gently and I threw my pillow on the floor. "Yeah?" The door opened slightly and Max stuck his head in. "I shouldn’t have said that," he whispered. I stared at him, I wasn’t going to give him anything here. "Have a wash and come to my party." His voice was firm. "I don’t get a I’m sorry?" I asked and he scoffed. "No, this is me. You know I would rather kill myself then say sorry to you." 'Wow," I breathed out. "Seriously, you might make a friend," he chuckled, closing my door. I laid in my bed for a few more moments, unsure what to do. I groaned as I heard the music kick in, laughter coming from downstairs. I was actually starving and dragged myself out of bed, choosing a short purple tea dress. I threw it on, brushing my hair through. I walked down the stairs, already pissed as I heard Max laughing with his pathetic friends. The kitchen was full of people, the room dark and our back doors open, people spilling out into the garden. I opened the fridge, getting myself a glass of wine and ignoring all the guests. "You made an appearance?" I heard the voice as I shut the fridge. "You look nice," I spat out, feeling awkward as f**k. "Thanks, so do you." Luke smiled at me and I fought down a grin. He was wearing a black jacket and a pair of dark tan combat trousers. He looked f*****g gorgeous, his smile large. "So you made an appearance? Max will be happy," Luke laughed, making me chuckle. "Yeah you know he won't." My voice was quick as I went into the garden, the music was up full blast and I sat in my mum's swinging chair, Luke coming to sit next to me. It surprised me, I thought that was the end of the interaction. Our thighs were touching and I took a huge gulp of my wine. "What's going on with you two?" Luke asked me and I shrugged, looking straight ahead. "He doesn't like me," I said simply. "You're his sister." "I don't fit in with him obviously, I'm not cool or beautiful. I think I embarrass him," I confessed, sitting back. "That's not true," Luke said quietly and I turned my body to him. "You're his best friend, you know him better than me. I'm sure he slags me off all the f*****g time." I looked back over at the house, Max was walking into the garden with two beautiful blondes on either side of him. "Luke! Come! Don't talk to f*****g her!" Max laughed and I turned my head back to Luke. "See," I whispered. "Ignore him," Luke said quietly. I stood up, flattening my dress. "I'm going upstairs, enjoy the party." I walked past Max as I heard him laugh. "What?!" I shouted at him, turning my body to him. "That is never going to happen, so you can try as much as you want. Luke prefers beautiful women," Max chuckled. "You're boring Max. Enjoy your herpes," I rolled my eyes. "f**k you Katrina, just f**k off out this house and live your virgin life!" Kane scoffed. I turned back round to him and all the faces now staring at me. I wanted to cry my eyes out, my hand shaking. "Why do you f*****g hate me so much?!" I screamed, walking towards him. Luke moved his arm across me, facing me. I ignored him, staring at Max. "Because you're a f*****g loser. Just kill yourself already," he rolled his eyes. "Max f*****g hell man." Luke turned to him. "Don't worry," I whispered, running back upstairs
