Haunted Shadows

1006 Words
The cold knot of fear lingered in Elena’s chest long after the man disappeared into the night. She could still feel his eyes on her, cold and calculating, stripping away her defenses. Her skin crawled, her heart thudding painfully against her ribs. She is being watched. She is sure of it. “El…?” Mia’s voice was soft, her arm still wrapped protectively around Elena’s shoulders. “Are you okay? You’re really freaking me out.” Elena forced herself to breathe, to push down the panic clawing at her insides. She couldn’t lose control. Not here. Not in front of Mia. “I’m fine,” she lied, her voice hollow. “Just… thought I saw someone I knew. It’s nothing.” Mia didn’t look convinced, but she didn’t push. Instead, she tightened her grip, her eyes full of worry. “Maybe we should call it a night. You look exhausted.” Elena’s chest tightened, guilt swirling inside her. She didn’t want to ruin Mia’s night. She didn’t want to be the fragile, broken friend who couldn’t handle a night out. But the memory of the man’s cruel smile lingered, chilling her to the bone. She wasn’t safe. Not out here. Not anymore. “Yeah,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Let’s go home.” The walk back to her apartment was a blur, her senses on high alert, every shadow a potential threat. She kept looking over her shoulder, half-expecting to see the man standing under a streetlight, watching her with those cold, unblinking eyes. But he was gone. Or maybe he was just better at hiding than she was at finding him. By the time they reached her apartment building, Elena’s nerves were frayed, exhaustion settling into her bones. She forced a smile as she hugged Mia, ignoring the concern in her best friend’s eyes. “I’m fine, really,” she insisted. “Just tired. Go home. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Mia hesitated, her arms tightening around Elena. “You sure? You don’t look fine.” Elena’s chest tightened, the familiar guilt twisting inside her. She hated lying to Mia. But she couldn’t tell her the truth. She couldn’t drag Mia into her nightmares. “I promise. I just need some sleep.” Mia didn’t look convinced, but she finally relented, her shoulders sagging. “Okay. But call me if you need anything. I mean it.” Elena nodded, forcing another smile. “I will. Goodnight, Mia.” Mia’s gaze lingered, worry flickering in her eyes before she finally turned and walked away. Elena watched her go, her heart aching with guilt. Mia deserved better than this—better than a friend who lied and kept secrets. Once Mia was out of sight, Elena’s smile crumbled, her shoulders sagging as the exhaustion crashed over her. She turned toward her building, her eyes scanning the shadows out of habit. But nothing moved, No one was there. She climbed the stairs to her apartment, her fingers trembling as she unlocked the door. The room was dark and silent, the faint glow of the streetlamp outside casting eerie shadows on the walls. Elena closed the door behind her, flipping the locks and sliding the deadbolt into place. She stood there for a moment, her back pressed against the door, her chest heaving. She is safe. She is alone. So why did she still feel like she was being watched? A shiver ran down her spine, her eyes flicking to the window. The curtains were drawn, the room hidden from prying eyes. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was out there, just beyond the glass, waiting for her to let her guard down. Her phone buzzed, the sudden noise making her jump. She fumbled for it, her fingers clumsy with fear. A message from an unknown number flashed on the screen "You can’t hide from the past, Elena." Her blood ran cold, Her hands shook as she stared at the words, her heart pounding so hard it hurt. No. This couldn’t be happening. It wasn’t possible. She deleted the message, her breath coming in ragged gasps. But the words were seared into her mind, echoing through her thoughts. "You can’t hide from the past." A cold chill wrapped around her, squeezing the air from her lungs. She know who is behind this. She know exactly who is trying to scare her. Adrian Blackwood. He is trying to break her. To dig up her past and use it against her. He had warned her that it wasn’t over, that he would find out who she really was. But this… this is cruel. Even for him. Fury ignited inside her, burning away the fear. She wouldn’t let him get away with this. She wouldn’t let him control her. She grabbed her phone, her fingers flying over the screen as she typed out a message, her anger fueling her boldness. "Leave me alone, Mr Blackwood. I won’t let you scare me." She hit send, her chest heaving, her blood boiling. But the response came almost instantly. "You think this is Adrian? You don’t know anything, Elena. But I know everything about you. And I’m coming for you." The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering to the floor. Her knees buckled, her body sliding down the door as the fear crashed over her. This isn’t Adrian. This is someone else. Someone darker. Someone that know about her past—about the things she had fought to forget. A memory clawed its way to the surface, a flash of cold eyes and cruel laughter, the echo of her father’s voice pleading for mercy. "I’ll pay you… just give me more time…" Elena’s body shook, her heart pounding, her vision blurring. She had buried that memory, locked it away where it couldn’t hurt her. But it is back, dragging her into the darkness she had fought so hard to escape. She thought she had left it behind. She thought she was safe. But she was wrong. She would never be safe.
