3 “Ouch, ouch,” I grunted with every step as I hobbled my way back out of the Columbus Circle subway station, wishing PETA would just come after me for battling an evil animal and put me out of my misery. “Ouch.” Elizabeth was kind enough not to laugh as she wrapped her arm around my waist to help me up the stairs. It was nearly ten, and the daytime crowds had cleared. It was nice not to be buffeted by people with every step, but it left more chances for people to notice me. “You should just heal yourself, dude,” Devon said in a stage whisper. “Eric told you to try it.” “Shh,” Elizabeth warned as a man cut a wide arc on the stairs to avoid coming near me.
