Perhaps to prove his own words, early the next morning, Kaelen appeared at the company in a grand, extravagant manner. He shoved open the door to my office with great force.
"My sight has returned. Your time as acting chairperson is over."
As he spoke, he waved his hand. Immediately, a group of people entered from the doorway and efficiently threw every single one of my belongings out of the office.
I took a slow, indifferent sip of the cold coffee in my hand.
"Kaelen, do you understand what price you will pay for doing this?"
He let out a short, mocking scoff.
"Seren, this is the Vesper family's company. That position belongs to me by right. As for you... You are only fit to train dogs or play with cats."
I had no desire to argue with him and turned to leave.
But the moment I stepped across the threshold, my secretary stood right in front of me, looking helpless while holding the leash of a dog I did not recognize.
"Ms. Corvyn, Mr. Vesper said this dog is to be exchanged for your Lucky... Early this morning, he sent people to the animal hospital and took Lucky away."
I stopped dead in my tracks. I turned and flung the contents of my coffee cup straight into Kaelen's face, right as he was looking at me with obvious delight.
Without wasting a moment to see how disheveled he looked, I hurried straight to the location linked to Lucky's tracking device.
Lucky had served as a guide dog for ten years, his organs and joints were already showing signs of aging. Worse still, he had been severely injured the night before. He absolutely could not endure any strenuous activity.
Yet when I arrived, I saw that Chloe was holding a whip and striking it hard across Lucky's back, forcing him to jump through a ring of fire.
"And they call this a guide dog? If it cannot even jump through fire, it is useless. We might as well kill it and cook it for meat!"
She crouched down as she spoke, running her hands over Lucky's body and squeezing his muscles.
Then she gave a cold, ruthless order.
"Kill it. We will have dog meat for dinner today."
I let out a sharp, cold laugh. I stepped forward, snatched the whip from her hand, and swung it hard against her body.
"c***k!" The sharp sound echoed across the entire yard.
Lucky limped over and pressed himself against my legs, whimpering softly, then turned his head to lick at his wounds.
Chloe screamed loudly. Her face drained of all color instantly from the intense pain.
Kaelen, who had arrived right behind me, rushed to her side and held her tightly in his arms, his face filled with distress.
"Seren, have you lost your mind? Why are you acting so crazy over a mere animal!"
Rage surged through me, threatening to overwhelm my reason.
I gripped the whip handle tightly and struck it repeatedly against Kaelen's chest.
"A mere animal? Kaelen, if not for Lucky, you would have died long ago. You should be down on your knees, thanking him as if he were the one who gave you a second life!"
Chloe shouted back at me defiantly.
"It is just a beast! Once it is no longer useful, being eaten to nourish people is the greatest honor they could ever hope for!"
I was so angry I almost laughed. I stared directly into Kaelen's eyes.
"Is that what you believe too?"
Kaelen looked down at Lucky. The disgust in his gaze was so thick it felt almost tangible.
"Anything that witnessed me in my weakest, most miserable state has no right to exist in this world."
A sharp, heavy pain shot through my heart, and my voice trembled.
"Even the dog that saved your life? And even me... the person who took care of you without a single complaint for ten whole years?"
He finally looked me straight in the eye and spoke with absolute certainty.
"If it weren't for you, I would never have gone blind. Seren, you are the one who ruined my life. You are the real culprit."
With those few words, he completely destroyed everything we had shared in the past.
In that instant, every ounce of strength left my body.
The leather whip, now stained with blood, slipped from my hand and clattered to the ground.
Lucky let out a soft bark and struggled to his feet, leaning against me to help me stay upright.
Kaelen had never seen me look so broken and vulnerable.
I watched as he seemed moved for a moment and reached out his hand, wanting to steady me. But I stepped back, keeping my distance, and stared deep into his bright, cold eyes.
"Kaelen, whose ten years is not worth the same as yours? You dragged me down and wasted ten years of my life. I will never let you walk away from this easily."
