Kaelen Vesper and I knew each other better than anyone else in the world.
He began using every possible means to seize the authority and power I held, through capital, business partners, and company shares.
We fought fiercely against each other in the business world, completely forgetting the powerful families standing behind both of us.
After three months of intense, ruthless conflict, engagement invitations sent out by our families without the knowledge of either of us arrived like a sudden clap of thunder, shattering everything.
Only then did we remember that, even now, we were still bound by a marriage arrangement.
The moment we appeared at the engagement banquet in our custom-made formal wear, the expressions on both our faces were as grim as if we had suffered a terrible loss.
"Seren, you really will stop at nothing just to keep me tied to you!"
Kaelen leaned against the door frame, his gaze icy cold.
I fired back immediately.
"Is not it you who wanted to use this engagement to apologize to me?"
We were the two central figures of this highly anticipated celebration, yet each of us wished the other would drop dead on the spot.
But in the beginning, things had certainly not been this way.
When I was ten years old and learned I was destined to marry Kaelen, I had given him my most cherished doll.
In return, he had presented me with his most prized model car.
At fifteen, when youthful affection first began to bloom, I bought a pair of matching rings, and he had personally set the diamonds into them.
At eighteen, we were kidn*pped together.
After escaping death, I swore I would take care of him for the rest of my life, and he had made a solemn vow that he would never, ever betray me.
Three years ago, I had finally discovered a method that could restore his sight.
He wept in my arms until he nearly fainted, holding my hand tightly and saying that at last he would be able to stand strong and protect me from all harm.
My heart had been filled with a happiness that was mixed with deep bitterness.
At that time, I truly believed that all our suffering had finally come to an end. I had never expected a change of fortune would come so quickly.
One day, Kaelen had taken Lucky out for a walk to clear his mind, and by accident had fallen into a deep pool thick with mud and silt.
Risking his own life, Lucky had used every bit of his strength to pull Kaelen out.
They lay exhausted on the bank, covered in muck, struggling to catch their breath.
It was exactly then that Chloe Hayes, who was also blind, appeared.
She called for emergency help, and by playing on the sympathy given to someone who shared the same disability, she quickly found a permanent place in Kaelen's life.
Perhaps the spotlights at the engagement ceremony were too bright and harsh, making my eyes burn and sting.
I lifted a hand to shield my face. When I lowered my hand, I saw the girl standing gracefully in the center of the hall.
She was dressed in a fine gown and held a white cane in her hand.
Looking at Kaelen standing beside her, his features soft with affection, I understood instantly.
"So we have a scene where someone tries to steal the groom today." Kaelen did not even glance at me.
He walked straight over to Chloe and took her hand in his. His voice rang clear and firm throughout the entire hall.
"The only person I love is her. Seren, being together only brings misery to us both. Do you really have no shame, planning to keep clinging to me like this?"
He appeared completely calm and self-assured, certain that I cared too much about my reputation to lose my composure or make a scene in front of so many people.
Just as he expected, I smiled gently, as if I was willing to step aside and grant his wish.
"Of course not. I wish you both happiness. However, since I am losing a fiancé for no good reason, I must be properly compensated."
Chloe bit her lower lip, looking delicate and pitiful as she spoke up to defend Kaelen.
"Ms. Corvyn, years ago Kaelen risked half his life to save you. Even if you feel no gratitude towards him, how can you still have the nerve to demand compensation?"
Hearing this, my lips curled into a faint, cold smile.
"So what you mean is, I am not allowed to ask for compensation at all, and instead I ought to be thanking him for his kindness even in a situation like this?"
Chloe wore an expression that showed she believed this was the most obvious truth in the world.
Kaelen reached out and pinched Chloe's cheek with a look of deep affection, then turned his eyes toward me.
"She is only upset because she cares about me," he paused briefly before continuing. "Seren, I will return all the business deals and assets I took from you during these past months. That will serve as your compensation."
His eyes darkened with determination as he added, "But I want to buy a share in the medical laboratory registered under your name."
I blinked, then lifted my face and smiled a bright, dazzling smile.
"Very well."
I had waited for such a long time, and at last, Kaelen had said exactly what I had been waiting to hear.
