From the very moment I first saw Chloe Hayes's sightless eyes, I knew exactly what Kaelen was planning.
As soon as the engagement banquet ended, he lost no time bringing Chloe along right behind me, pressing me to take them straight to the medical laboratory.
The doctors on staff showed no surprise at all when they saw the two of them following me. Without needing any instruction from me, they immediately led Chloe away to undergo a full examination.
Kaelen watched until Chloe had disappeared behind the examination room door, and only once he was certain I would not interfere did he begin to wander through the space, looking around with interest.
This laboratory had been established during the very first year after Kaelen lost his sight.
Back then, I had hired the finest specialists from every country, purchased the most advanced equipment available, and gathered the most expensive medicines from all over the world.
I poured hundreds of millions of dollars into it every single year, all for the sole purpose of one day restoring Kaelen's vision.
I had never imagined, however, that this facility built entirely to serve his eyes would ever have a second person lying on its examination table.
A self-mocking smile touched my lips, and I spoke in a cold, sharp tone.
"Kaelen, you really do take kindness for weakness."
All pretense between us had long since been abandoned, harsh words like this were exchanged countless times whenever we met.
He had grown completely used to it. Behind us, the examination room door swung open.
Chloe stepped out, so excited that she struck her cane hard and rapidly against the floor.
"Kaelen! The doctors say my eyes can be cured!"
Kaelen's own expression brightened with emotion.
The two of them embraced, their faces filled with eager hope for the light they longed to see.
I lowered my gaze, having no desire to look at them any longer.
But today, Chloe had not only become Kaelen's fiancée, she had also just learned she would regain her sight.
At that moment, she believed herself to be the most triumphant person in the world. So triumphant, in fact, that she dared to treat me with utter disrespect.
"Seren, you must have worked so hard to take care of Kaelen all these years." Her lips curled into a smug smile as she continued. "I suppose you used to dream day and night that you would marry him, did not you?"
She tilted her head mockingly before adding, "But it is a pity. You see, I am the only person in this world who truly understands him."
Her tone turned sharp and disdainful as she delivered the final blow. "You were never anything more than someone he settled for because he had no other choice."
She held her head high, her sharp chin tilted toward me. Her eyes held no light at all, yet her challenge was unmistakable.
"Kaelen belongs to me! And as for you... you are just like that old dog of yours, unpleasant to look at, and you deserve to be cast aside."
Kaelen's face showed only indulgence and affection.
"Now, that is enough. I know how much you care for me. The most important thing right now is your eyes."
He turned then, fixing his gaze coldly on me.
"How long will it take before Chloe's vision is fully restored?"
I spread my hands in a gesture of indifference.
"How should I know? You will have to ask the doctors."
Behind me, the medical team quickly stepped forward, holding treatment plans and records, and invited the two of them into a private office to discuss the details.
As soon as their figures had vanished from sight, my smile faded completely. I turned and left the building with my secretary.
My assistant walked beside me, clearly burning with indignation.
"Ms. Corvyn, they really do not appreciate everything you have done for them at all! That k********g years ago was clearly aimed at Kaelen from the start! You were only dragged into it because of him! And after all these years of caring for him without complaint, he brings another woman along and treats you like this!"
I arched my eyebrows and smiled faintly, then gave a nod, my expression turning cold.
"Yes. Everyone else sees the truth clearly, yet he insists on blaming it all on me." I let out a quiet, bitter laugh before continuing. "You cannot wake someone who is only pretending to be asleep." My eyes hardened with resolve, I added. "Do not worry. Before two months had passed, he would regret everything."
Over those next two months, I divided my time strictly between my company and the animal hospital where Lucky was recovering.
The Vesper Group's stock prices dropped day after day, following the scandal of Kaelen publicly breaking his engagement.
Yet Kaelen remained completely unaware of what was happening, his entire focus was fixed on Chloe's treatment.
Every day, as my secretary reported on Kaelen's activities, I could not help but feel a deep sense of scorn.
He had been blind for ten years and had never fully understood the workings of the company.
He believed that simply driving me away meant all his problems were solved, and he could leave everything else to run itself.
He had no idea there were so many ways I could choose to take back what was mine.
I calculated the timeline carefully, then spoke in a calm, steady voice.
"Continue acquiring shares in the Vesper Group. We must complete the full acquisition within two weeks, and then schedule a press conference."
While my plan moved forward in an orderly fashion, Chloe's condition also improved gradually, until she began to make faint glimmers of light.
The day of the press conference was exactly the day when the bandages were finally removed from Chloe's eyes.
To celebrate the restoration of her sight, Kaelen arranged a grand banquet and invited many of the most influential people in the business world.
He had booked the main banquet hall, which happened to be located directly opposite the conference room where I was holding my announcement.
Guests who had received invitations to both events stood in the hallway, looking uncertain and unsure which entrance they should take.
I noticed their hesitation and smiled gently.
"Please, come this way. After all, the main topic of today's press conference is the official acquisition of the Vesper Group."
From across the hall, I watched Kaelen's face turn instantly ashen. His hands shook as he pulled out his phone, and I could see the screens filled with red figures indicating plummeting stock values.
He ground his teeth together, and a roar of pure rage tore from his throat.
"Seren! Is this how you choose to take revenge on me?! You..." His words cut off abruptly.
His body swayed unsteadily, and for a split second, the look in his eyes became empty and unfocused once more.
I leaned forward and tapped the microphone before me, waiting until I was certain my voice would carry clearly through the whole hall, and then I began to laugh.
"I have no interest in wasting my time taking revenge on you. I simply suddenly remembered something I forgot to tell you earlier."
I looked directly at him... the man standing before me, his face pale and contorted with fear, and spoke slowly, enunciating every word.
My expression turned cold and mocking.
"Your vision requires ongoing medication to sustain it. And the supplies in that laboratory are only sufficient to treat one person."
I paused deliberately, watching his expression shift from confusion to terror, before continuing.
"Congratulations... your beloved has now regained her sight." My eyes gleamed with satisfaction as I delivered the final words. "But now... what are you going to do?"
