The night had fallen completely, leaving the terrace bathed in the soft glow of lanterns. The faint hum of music drifted from the reception below, but up here it was just Amelia and Ethan, alone with the ocean wind brushing against them.
Amelia clutched her shawl around her shoulders, trying to steady her racing heart. She couldn’t stop thinking about the way Ethan’s hand had brushed hers earlier, about the weight of his gaze, about the tension that had built over the past days.
“You’ve been quiet tonight,” Ethan said, stepping closer, his voice low and calm.
“I’m thinking,” she replied, her throat suddenly dry. “About… us. About everything that’s happening.”
He studied her for a long moment. “Amelia…”
Before she could respond, he closed the distance between them. His hand found hers, fingers entwining naturally, almost instinctively. She swallowed hard, heart pounding.
“Ethan…” she whispered.
He leaned closer, his forehead resting briefly against hers. The closeness sent heat through her entire body. “I can’t stop feeling this,” he admitted quietly. “Pretending… it’s impossible.”
Her breath caught. “Neither can I,” she confessed, voice trembling.
For a heartbeat, the world fell away. The music, the family, the contract—they all disappeared. There was only him, and her, and the electric pull between them.
Slowly, deliberately, he tilted his head, giving her time, giving her choice. Her eyes fluttered closed, and when their lips finally met, it was gentle, tentative, full of longing and unspoken emotion.
The kiss deepened naturally, a soft explosion of everything they’d been holding back. Amelia’s hands rose to rest on his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath the fabric of his shirt. Ethan’s arms wrapped around her, pulling her closer without hesitation.
When they finally pulled apart, breathless, their foreheads rested together, hearts racing in sync.
“I shouldn’t have done that,” Ethan murmured, though his eyes betrayed a truth he couldn’t hide.
“I don’t want you to stop,” she whispered back, her fingers brushing against his cheek.
He gave a faint, almost imperceptible smile. “Neither do I.”
And for the first time, Amelia realized that the line between pretend and real had vanished entirely.
