The First Impressions

The chandelier in the grand ballroom glimmered like a constellation, casting golden light across the polished floor. Bridesmaids in flowing gowns and groomsmen in tailored suits moved gracefully around the room, arranging tables and ensuring everything was perfect. Amelia Hart felt like a small, nervous star caught in someone else’s galaxy. She adjusted her silk gown and smoothed her hair for the third time. Her heels clicked softly on the marble floor as she glanced at the entrance—and froze. Ethan Black stepped in. He looked exactly like he had at the café, only sharper now, tailored to perfection, with a confident air that made him seem untouchable. Amelia felt a flutter in her stomach she refused to acknowledge. He spotted her immediately and offered a small, reassuring smile. “Shall we?” he asked, gesturing toward the chaos of the ballroom. Amelia nodded, suddenly aware of how nervous she sounded when she spoke. “Yes… let’s.” ⸻ As they moved through the room, Ethan handled every introduction with ease. When Amelia’s mother introduced him to extended family, he offered a polite handshake and engaging conversation, instantly charming everyone without seeming rehearsed. Amelia, watching him, felt a mixture of admiration and irritation. How could someone be this perfect at everything? She was supposed to be in control, yet Ethan made her feel… disarmed. During the toast rehearsal, her cousin whispered to her, “Who’s that with you? He seems… familiar.” Amelia’s heart skipped. She gave a small smile. “Just a friend.” Ethan, overhearing the comment, shot her a quick glance with a playful smirk. Friend, he mouthed silently. Amelia felt her cheeks heat. ⸻ Later, as dinner tables were arranged, Amelia noticed Ethan subtly guiding her through tricky conversations. When an aunt began her usual interrogation about Amelia’s love life, Ethan leaned in slightly. “Tell her about your new project,” he suggested, voice calm and steady. Amelia followed his lead, describing the latest fashion line, and the aunt nodded, distracted by the enthusiasm in Amelia’s voice. Ethan’s presence acted as a shield—protective but understated. Amelia stole a glance at him. There was something in his expression—a brief shadow behind the charm—that made her pause. She couldn’t place it. Mysterious, almost… hidden. ⸻ After the rehearsal, Amelia and Ethan stepped outside onto a balcony overlooking the city. The air was cool, scented with faint blossoms from nearby planters. Amelia exhaled, feeling tension leave her shoulders. “You handled the family well tonight,” she admitted. Ethan smiled faintly. “It wasn’t difficult. You made it easy.” Amelia looked up at him, startled. “Me?” “Yes,” he said simply. “Your confidence, your presence… it helps.” Her heart fluttered. She wasn’t used to compliments that didn’t feel rehearsed or superficial. “Thank you,” she murmured. They lingered in silence, the city lights twinkling beneath them. Amelia felt drawn to him, a dangerous pull she didn’t want to explore but couldn’t resist. ⸻ A small, unexpected moment broke the quiet: a flower petal drifted down from a nearby tree and landed softly on Amelia’s shoulder. Ethan reached out, brushing it away with careful fingers. “Always a gentleman,” Amelia teased, trying to keep her voice steady. “Only when necessary,” he replied, with that same faint smirk that made her pulse race. Amelia caught herself studying him—the lines of his face, the calm precision in his movements. She realized, with an uncomfortable thrill, that there was more to him than she understood. And even though she told herself he was just a rented boyfriend, something about him suggested he was more. ⸻ Later that evening, back at the hotel, Amelia sank onto her couch, exhausted but unable to sleep. She replayed the night over in her head: Ethan’s charm, his subtle attentiveness, the mysterious way he seemed… untouchable. Professional. Temporary. Nothing more. And yet… why can’t I stop thinking about him?
