Chapter 3

SAVANNA “Christian’s plane crashed… He’s missing.” I couldn’t breathe. My vision blurred as hot tears flooded my eyes. The luxurious interior of Kaden’s SUV spun around me. “No,” I choked out, my voice breaking. “No, that’s not- he can’t be gone. We were supposed to go to the island. For Haze. He promised-” A raw, ugly sob tore from my throat. I doubled over in the passenger seat, clutching my stomach as if I could physically hold myself together. The bag of s*x toys lay forgotten at my feet which was a cruel reminder of how excited I’d been just an hour ago. All those toys were meant for Christian. For us. Now he might never see them. Might never touch me again. Suddenly, strong arms pulled me across the console. Kaden had gotten out and came around to my side faster than I could process. He lifted me out of the car like I weighed nothing, cradling me against his broad chest as he carried me inside the villa. His scent enveloped me completely. “Shh, Savanna. Breathe,” he murmured against my hair, his voice a deep rumble that vibrated through my body. He kicked the front door shut behind us and carried me straight to the living room, lowering me onto the oversized couch. Instead of pulling away, he sat beside me with one powerful arm banded around my shoulders, holding me tight as I shattered. “I can’t lose him,” I cried, burying my face in his shirt. The fabric was warm from his body heat. “We’ve only had three years. I was finally going to be braver for him. Less… restrained. I bought all those things because I wanted to please him completely during Haze. What if he’s-” “Without a body, there is still hope,” Kaden said firmly as his hand stroked slow and soothing circles on my back. His touch was gentle but commanding, the kind of comfort only a man like him could give. “Christian is strong. He’s one of the toughest alphas in the pack. You know that. Trust in his strength, Savanna. He wouldn’t leave you if he had any fight left in him.” His words should have helped, but they only made the tears fall harder. I clung to him, my fingers twisting in his shirt as sobs wracked my body. My full breasts pressed against his solid chest with every heaving breath. Even through my grief, I was mortifyingly aware of how good he felt- hard muscle, steady heartbeat and that intoxicating scent that made my wolf whine with confused need. My panties were still damp from the car ride, and now fresh slick mixed with the tears soaking his shirt. This is wrong. So wrong. He’s your father-in-law. Christian’s dad. But I couldn’t let go. His big hand moved up and cupped the back of my neck and thumb stroked the sensitive skin there. A shiver ran down my spine that had nothing to do with grief. “I should have gone with him,” I whispered brokenly. “Or should have called more. What if the last thing he remembers is not getting satisfied by me, me being too shy in bed? …..I wanted this Haze to be different…” Kaden’s grip tightened slightly. I felt his chest expand as he drew in a slow, controlled breath. “You’re not responsible for this. The crash… There's a traitor in the pack. We’ll find them. But right now, you need to stay strong. For him.” He pulled back just enough to look at me. Those dark, stormy eyes searched my tear-streaked face. With a gentleness that made my heart clench, he cupped my jaw with one large hand as his thumb slowly wiped away the tears rolling down my cheeks. The touch was electric. Intimate. Far too tender for the icy, distant Kaden I thought I knew. “You’re not alone in this,” he said quietly, voice rough. His thumb brushed my lower lip accidentally, sending a spark straight to my core. I let out a shaky sigh. For one suspended second, his gaze dropped to my mouth. Then he pulled back, but not completely. His fingers slid into my hair, stroking through the strands in slow, soothing pets. I leaned into it like a touch-starved wolf with eyes fluttering closed. The sensation was heavenly, possessive and comforting all at once. Heat bloomed low in my belly despite everything. My n*****s peaked painfully against my dress. Kaden cleared his throat, pulling his hand away as if it burned him. He stood up, towering over me, his expression once again guarded and stern. “I’ll be staying at the villa for the time being,” he announced. His tone left no room for discussion. “Ever since you and Christian got married, I’ve kept my distance. But things are different now. Dangerous. You are to remain home as much as possible. If you need to go out, you will report to me first. No exceptions.” I nodded numbly, wiping at my eyes with the back of my hand. “Okay… I understand.” He looked down at me, something unreadable flickering in his gaze. The way he stood there with his legs planted wide, arms crossed over that powerful chest- screamed dominance. The same dominance Christian had, but amplified. More rough and experienced. “If you need anything,” he continued, softer now, “anything at all, you come to me. Day or night. Don’t hesitate.” The implication hung heavy in the air. Anything. My mind flashed to the bag of toys still in the car. To the toys meant for his son. To the forbidden thoughts I’d had on the drive here. Fresh shame mixed with the grief churning inside me. “Thank you, Kaden,” I whispered, my voice hoarse from crying. “I don’t know what I’d do right now without you.” He stared at me for a long moment. I could see the muscle in his jaw flexing, his hands clenching at his sides as if fighting some internal battle. Finally, he gave a short nod. “Get some rest. I’ll have someone bring your things in.” He turned to leave the room, but paused at the doorway. His broad back was rigid. “One more thing, Savanna.” I looked up with my racing heart. His voice dropped, low and edged with warning. “Haze is coming soon. For both of us. Don’t make this harder than it already is.” The door clicked shut behind him, leaving me alone on the couch, cheeks wet, body aching, and mind reeling with grief, guilt… and a terrifying, forbidden heat that refused to die. What- did he mean by that- I pressed my thighs together, biting back a whimper as another wave of wetness soaked my panties. Christian was missing. Possibly gone. And all I could think about was how safe and right Kaden’s arms had felt around me. What the hell is wrong with me?
