Chapter 7: the shift

I Spend the day helping Freya with all her jobs, which turns out to basically be a substitute luna. I instantly click with her and by the end of the day we're walking around the pack house laughing at absolutely nothing and getting some very odd looks from other pack members. After dinner I decide on an early night and snuggle into bed staring at the ceiling and thinking over everything before I drift into a deep sleep.

'Jasmine.....'

My eyes fly open as a soft voice calls out to me. I scan the room for intruders and shake my head when I find nothing there.

'Jasmine.' The voice is strangely clear, like it's coming from inside my head and I massage my forehead in confusion.

'Girl would you calm down it's me your wolf' the voice barks and I freeze. My wolf? 

'Yeah b***h your wolf. My name is Sapphire.'

Aw Sapphire that's so pretty... Wait MY WOLF? How are you talking to me right now?

'We share the same body duh, I can speak to you through our mind link. Now not to rush you but I have been waiting for this for waayyy to long so get your ass outside.'

Damn, my wolf is cranky.

Why do I have to go outside? 

'Would you just do it?' I cautiously step out of bed and tiptoe downstairs and out the backdoor.

'We're going to the woods' I can barely think as my bare feet run across the grass and onto the crisp leaves of the forest floor.

Well what now?

'I need you to close you eyes Jasmine and focus on me. Imagine what I might look like, what it feels like to be on four paws, to feel the wind in your fur'

I scoff. This is dumb.

'Would you just do it already!'

Ok ok! I take in a deep breath and fill my head with wolfy thoughts; what it would be like to run through the woods, what Sapphire's fur is like, how it feels to have a tail. Haha. Conclusion it's very tempting to chase.

As my mind is lost in waggy thoughts, I feel my joints start to ache and my body flushes with heat. I shift uncomfortably as the ache spreads to my bones and muscles.

Pop.

My eyes fly open as i look down at my arm which has grown.The other follows suit with a pop and soon i am on all fours, thrown down by the impact of my legs breaking. Oh for f***s sake, I think. I'm turning into a f*****g wolf.

I strangled scream escapes my lips as my back breaks and I can feel my bones snapping and elongating. Jesus Christ this is painful.

'I'm sorry Jasmine, it'll be over soon I promise . Just breathe'

I grit my teeth and let my body deform around me. The heat is unbearable and I can feel my skin sweating buckets. And then it stops. I look down and find paws underneath. My head is heavy and I am covered in white and golden fur. I can't help but laugh in my head and shuffle on wobbly legs. I look back and lift my tail up. Giggling, I can't help but wag it, causing me to howl with laughter and excitement and I try to take off into the air, only to have my legs crumble underneath me and I face plant the ground. Smooth.

'Would you chill out man? We need to get used to this body before you break it!' Sapphire growls.

Oops. I clamber back onto my paws and resist the urge to dash off again. 

'Let's just take it easy shall we? Step a paw forward and try that.' I gingerly step forward and steady myself before doing the same with the other. Before long I'm walking forward slowly but steadily and grinning to myself. 

We spend the night developing our motor skills and by sun rise, we're running through the woods and jumping over fallen logs. I am completely in awe of Sapphire and the way she moves as she guides her easily over the forest floor. We emerge at the edge of the woods and I think of human thoughts to shift back which is must less painful than last time. There's a very large shirt at the edge of the woods left for people who didn't strip for shifting. Sapphire ripped my favourite pyjama shorts and I'm still on the fence about forgiving her. 

I collapse into bed and grin at the ceiling, feeling sleep wash over me.

'Night b***h' Sapphire smirks.
