“What do you mean the Werewolf Council is no more?” Rosalee asked Nessa sharply, her voice betraying the panic wrecking her heart.
“I meant it exactly as those words suggest. The Werewolf Council has been eliminated. A new governing body will take over the supernatural world and the human authorities representing our Clan’s interests are now working together with this new governing body, as per our Skipper’s instructions.”
The news hit Rosalee like a train and threw all of her plans into the gutters. Just a few weeks ago, she had seen an opportunity in the plight of the Omegas within the Tiger’s Eye Pack and starting with Parvus Millicent, she had begun to use her position as Luna to try to improve their living conditions. In turn, she could feel more and more Omegas lowering their guard around her, some of them going so far to treat her with more friendliness than owed by servants to their mistress.
When she had asked for her own Omega servants, some of the she-wolves who had accompanied her on the tour on her second day had even volunteered for the job. Though the volunteers were eventually denied the position by Levi using the excuse of a lack of experience, it validated Rosalee’s gut feelings.
The Omegas were the lowest ranking wolves in the pack but they had strength in numbers. If only she could win all of them over to her side, she would have a sizable army, and she could care less about how big or strong their wolves were. True strength didn’t lie in what the eyes could see, and as one of the most successful reaper students in her Clan, she understood that logic all too well.
In fact, everything was going so well that Rosalee was beginning to become paranoid that it was all too good to be true. The whispers of the gossiping Omegas in hallways soon gave her even more cause to worry.
Just last week, the Beta was away on pack business but from the gossip through the grape vines, Rosalee learned that it wasn’t any simple pack business. The Beta was going to pay a visit to his nephew, the son of a cousin, who represented the Tiger’s Eye Pack at the Werewolf Council. Rumor had it that there was trouble in paradise.
Yet, the last thing that Rosalee had expected was this kind of trouble. As per her side of the bargain, she had reported everything she had heard back to her uncle through Nessa, but there were no new instructions or any news from her uncle, until today.
“How long have you known?” Rosalee asked calmly as reason quickly took over again. Now was not the time to fret.
“I warned you, Luna,” Nessa smirked. “You need us.”
“You’ve made your point,” Rosalee said in resignation, knowing full well that once again, she was no match for her uncle and this time, she had more than just her uncle to contend with. If she guessed right, her husband would be bursting through the door any moment now to confront her Clan for not standing behind his pack.
As Rosalee calmed down and began to assess her situation, she knew that her uncle was not done with the lesson that he was trying to teach her. The wrath of her husband would come and go like a tropical storm, fiery and damaging but it would pass. The thought that kept her heart dangling was what her uncle had in mind for their alliance with the Tiger’s Eye Pack.
Without the backing of the Werewolf Council, the heydays of the pack was obviously over, and the Smith Clan would immediately become the stronger partner of this alliance. In the world of criminals, the strong would never miss the opportunity to take advantage of the weak.
“Your uncle has informed the Alpha that our Clan will be increasing our cut from the smuggling of Tiger’s Eye, witches and humans at the cost of the pack. Effectively, our Clan would be claiming 70% of the profits to cover for the extra cost of securing our smuggling routes, since the Tiger’s Eye Pack are no longer able to do that.”
Before Nessa could continue adding salt to Rosalee’s wounds, the wooden door to her quarters plopped down onto the floor with a loud resounding thud.
“HOW DARE YOU, YOU SNEAKY b***h!”
The roar of the Alpha bounced off the walls of the sitting room like a fearsome clap of thunder, causing even the well-trained female buttonmen in the room to tremble in fear. The one Omega servant in the room was already in tears and had fallen to the ground as Jesse took large strides towards his pale Luna.
The color on her face had drained the very moment when he kicked down her door and despite the calm look in her eyes, he could feel the fear radiating off her aura.
“Leave! All of you!”
Everyone in the room scurried towards the open door but despite how fast everyone ran out, Jesse didn’t miss the triumphant smirk on the faces of the stocky female who was just standing beside his Luna.
“You were spying on me, on my pack, the whole time, weren’t you? You knew about everything, yet as my Luna, you didn’t even have the decency to warn me!”
Jesse’s infuriated accusations made Rosalee fearful for the first time since setting foot in this pack. Her husband was no i***t and he must have known that his brides’ trousseau included not only female servants for his Luna, but rather female servants who were trained to do many different things.
There was no doubt in Rosalee’s mind that the previous Lunas from her Clan had also spied on her husband and his pack, and the female buttonmen were even trained to sleep with the Alpha together with their Luna to try to gain his favor and exert some influence on him.
However, in the entire history of their alliance, they remained equal partners, and neither side had been able to truly gain the upper hand despite the mutual spying and scheming. Until this very day.
Rosalee knew that regardless of what she said, her husband wouldn’t believe her and even if he did, it wouldn’t change anything. Her Clan had kicked the dog when it was down and worse, the dog now has no choice but to stick with them or risk losing their entire smuggling business.
Closing her eyes in defeat, she allowed her defences to crumble as tears of indignation and fear rolled down her face. She had done everything that she could to achieve the one goal that she lived for since the death of her father. No matter what curveballs life threw at her, she hadn’t given up nor did she simply give in to fate.
Time and again, she had chosen to fight, but in the end, the results were always the same, and this time, she wasn’t so sure if she could continue fighting. The walls of steel that she had built around herself were crumbling and she was too tired to try to rebuild them. She knew that the worst that could happen now was to be killed by her husband, but even then, at least her mother and sister were safe.
With that knowledge, Rosalee couldn’t help but smile weakly as she waited for her husband to make his move, but the pain never came.
“You will pay for this, Rosalee,” Jesse hissed through gritted teeth. “But not today, oh no, you still have value, little Luna. If I kill you, your uncle will just send me another Smith woman and I rather much enjoy your little games.”
A calloused thumb gently wiped away a tear on Rosalee’s cheek and her eyes flew open in surprise as she felt the familiar warm breath of her husband on her face.
“I’ll let your uncle have the money, Rosalee, after all, what’s money compared to the pretty face in front of me. Mark my words, little Luna, things are just getting interesting now and I’d strongly advise you to pick your side wisely. You may be a Smith, but don’t forget that I’m your Alpha and husband.”
