“No, not this dress,” I said to Clover as she handed me an elaborate evening gown to try on. “Something simple, cheap but elegant. We’re trying to save money here, or at least we have to look the part.”
Clover nodded in understanding while rummaging through my clothes again. My gaze followed her and stopped at the panel that Levi and I had crawled out of just last night.
“Luna?” Clover asked a little louder as waved her hand in front of my face to get my attention.
Gathering my thoughts quickly, I put on a quick smile before grabbing a simple black bodycon dress that she had picked out. My husband had suddenly called for a family dinner tonight and based on the news from my uncle, I could only guess that it was related to the new business opportunity from the auction houses that were springing up like mushrooms after the rain.
As usual, my uncle ensured that I only received enough information to complete any tasks that he had for me at this pack, but with Clover on my side now, I was able to learn much more. After the formation of the new supernatural Union government, there appeared to have been an uptick in criminal activities.
For my uncle and my husband, this was naturally great news. For about a month now, my Clan has been supplying a few large auction houses with human bounty hunters to capture vampires, witches and werewolves to sell on the black market. Our reapers were some of the best hitmen in the country, and I didn’t doubt that we were making a healthy profit out of this new business.
What intrigued me was my uncle’s seeming willingness to share this new business with my husband, and I was quite curious to find out exactly what my uncle had proposed. On the other hand, I had the simple task to ensure that my husband would take up my uncle’s offer, despite not knowing what it was about.
After another female buttonman had done my hair and makeup, I put on my best smile and headed to our family dining room. To my surprise, not only were Millie and Orphelin already seated, Chadron was also present.
“Oh, how wonderful it is for you to join us tonight, Chadron,” I exclaimed warmly as I took my seat while smiling my thousand watt smile at the young werewolf.
Unlike his mother, the young werewolf was much better at hiding his emotions. His face was a flawless mask of calm as he returned a polite smile. His mother on the other hand was a very different story. Her pale face and dark circles couldn’t even be covered by make-up and knowing how fast werewolves healed, I could only imagine how much grief she must have gone through since her birthday celebration last night.
The giant wooden doors creaked open and footsteps echoed in the dining room as my husband made a grand entrance with a dozen warriors behind him. Avoiding the gaze of Levi, I stood up and smiled at my husband sweetly.
Jesse’s face softened as our eyes met and he made a detour to walk over to me and gave me a gentle peck on the lips before walking to his end of the table. His open display of affection heightened the tension in the room, and I could smell the jealousy reeking from the tight smiles on the faces of the concubines.
My heart clenched as I thought of how Millie must be feeling but it was better for her that I had our husband’s favor than not. At the very least, I would have the power to protect her. As if Millie wasn’t causing me enough grief, I could feel a brief but intense stare from the pair of dark blue eyes that I had sworn to never look at again.
“I called everyone here tonight because I have an important announcement to make,” Jesse said matter-of-factly as the Omegas served the first course.
“Thanks to my Luna, our alliance with the Smith Clan grows stronger by the day and recently, they contacted me about a new business opportunity. Instead of selling our Tiger’s Eye direct from the mines, the Skipper suggested we refine the gem stone before selling it, in very specific ways. This could bring us much higher prices and I’d be travelling to Boston tomorrow to discuss the deal with the Skipper.”
A piercing clang sounded in the room as metal collided with wood, and I resisted the urge to raise my eyebrows at Orphelin’s slip. An Omega ran over quickly to clear the fork that she had dropped and brought her a new one.
Ignoring her faux pas, Jesse shifted his gaze from me to his son.
“It’s time for you to learn the ropes, Chadron. You’ll accompany me on this trip and we’ll leave tomorrow morning.”
Suspicion flooded my heart and I had to resist the urge to look at Levi to seek out any clues of what my husband might be planning. From everything that I had learned since last night, I had no doubts that the last thing Jesse wanted was for Chadron to be his heir. If my guess was right, I would go so far to say that Jesse felt threatened by Chadron, even now.
After all, Chadron was not only his only full-blooded werewolf offspring, but also the nephew of his Beta. Besides having a gold mine in their family’s pockets, his Beta was also a fierce warrior, well respected within the Theta rank in the pack. Most importantly, my uncle told me before my marriage that Jesse had come to power after murdering and overthrowing his own father, the previous Alpha and the king maker in his story, was also his Beta.
The young werewolf nodded submissively but from the way that his knuckles were turning white from gripping his knife too tightly, I knew that he was probably as suspicious of his father’s intent as I was. Except in my case, I was more eager to see how much of this house would burn down after this little visit to my Clan.
I couldn’t help but wonder if my uncle had any part to play in this or if this was solely a scheme cooked up by my husband. Hopefully, my brother would have more information and Clover would be able to enlighten me in the morning when she was back from her trip to the cave to wait for my brother’s call.
“And Rosalee,” Jesse said solemnly as he locked eyes with me. “You’re in charge while I’m away. I’ll leave Levi here for your safety and I expect to find my pack in the same shape as I had left it.”
My poor heart nearly exploded and I had to swallow the half-chewed potato in my mouth in a gulp to prevent myself from choking. I nodded obediently at my husband, careful to avoid the gaze of Levi even as my head was filling up with images of everything that we could do while my husband was away.
Curling my toes tightly in my shoes and allowing the exertion of my body to remind me what was at stake here finally calmed my racing heart as I smiled confidently and gratefully at my husband.
“I won’t disappoint you, Alpha,” I assured him while capturing the utter shock on Orphelin’s face from the corner of my eyes.
The unbridled alarm in her eyes was so out of character that I could only guess that she was probably thinking along the same lines as me. Her already pale face was covered in perspiration as her gaze shifted between our husband and her son.
If Orphelin couldn’t be bothered to put up an act anymore, then this little trip that my husband was going to make would probably be even more interesting than I had thought.
Something told me that the Beta family’s days were numbered. If not, then the days of my husband’s rule over his pack would soon come to an end.
