Act 2 - Twist of Fate

“Reject me back!”                My voice quivered as a thousand knives sliced away slowly at my heart, plunging me into an ocean of pain as the short-lived euphoria moments ago disappeared like it had never been there in the first place.                The blue eyes that had drawn me in were now glistening with tears as disbelief, anger and sadness swam in them. I was no werewolf expert but I knew enough that the werewolves believed fated mates to be a sacred gift from their Moon Goddess. Well, perhaps not the werewolves of this pack, seeing how so many ranked male wolves had a harem of their own.                “No,” a strangled whisper left the soft lips that I had just tasted a few moments ago.               Pushing the turmoil of emotions threatening to spill out of my heart aside, I took a step forward and gripped Levi firmly by the shoulders, shaking his already trembling body without a care, as if my heart wasn’t just pining for him.                “Are you mad?!” I hissed. “Do you know what our Alpha would do to us, if he knew? I’m not even a werewolf, so why do you care? Just reject me and get over it, and argh, I don’t know, get your own harem! Isn’t that the tradition of your pack?”                A shimmer of hope gleamed in the forlorn eyes before me as a pair of shaky hands reached up to cup my face. Even though his hands were clammy and cold, they didn’t disgust me like I thought they would.               Instead, a wave of calm washed over me, assuring me that everything was fine, as if this very moment was meant to be and I had nothing to worry about. My pounding heart began to slow down slightly and the uncomfortable feeling that it was going to burst out of my body went away.                “Are you worried about me?” Levi asked hoarsely, his voice full of hope and my heart was screaming at me to nod my head.                 “No,” I said with as much certainty as I could muster but even my own ears were not convinced.                “You do,” he blurted like an excited child at a carnival. “We can run away! We’ll go, tonight! I’ll make you happy, I promise! I won’t ever treat you the way the werewolves in this pack treat their she-wolves. You’d be my only woman, the other half of my soul-”               “Stop! Levi, just, please don’t!” I sighed in exasperation as I swatted his hands away and turned around.              Some reason seeped into my mind again now that I was no longer staring into those dark blue eyes and I made a mental note to myself to never look into them again.                “I don’t know why you’re so insistent, Levi. Clearly, the werewolves in your pack do not give a s**t about fated mates, at least not the ranked ones and though you’re neither a Beta, Gamma or Delta, you’re the head warrior and the Alpha’s most trusted man, so why should you be any different? Besides, I’m not interested in love or soul mates or any of these bullshit! You know why I’m here and if you thought for a second that we could simply run away and live happily after, then, I don’t think that there’s anything else that I have to say to you.”               “I’m not like them, Rose,” he mumbled weakly. “If you would give me a chance, I’d prove it to you. You’re my second chance, and I can’t, I can’t permit you to slip through my fingers.”                The pain in his voice made my own heart clenched together tightly and I had to lean onto my dresser for support as I clutched desperately at my chest to make the tightness go away.                “It doesn’t matter, Levi. We are a mistake, and you have a chance to right that wrong now. You know better than me what’s going to happen if you don’t reject me, and I don’t want to hurt you.”                “I won’t,” Levi declared. His resolute tone made me feel a little giddy with joy but my mind was made up.                I couldn’t put my family in danger because of a man, not to mention my plans to avenge Papa. I couldn’t throw all of that away now, not especially when my husband had started to show signs of trusting me.                “Do what you will, Rose. I won’t give you up like this, not even if it kills me. I won’t lose my mate again, and I know that you don’t love our Alpha. You’re not your cousin or like the concubines. I can feel it in my bones, but I’m not naive. I know you carry a large burden and I know we can’t simply walk away if we don’t have a death wish, but I’m willing to fight for us, even if you’re not.”                Without waiting for me to say another word, Levi grabbed the packaging of my birth control pills with him and left. The sound of the closing door shattered the facade that I had kept up as I slumped onto my chair.                Suddenly, a bone chilling thought ran through my mind and I hurried to fumble around my dresser and the furniture in my room for any bugs. Levi was a werewolf and I was sure that he wouldn’t have said so much if he had heard anyone within earshot, but even werewolves couldn’t detect listening devices.                I had already swept my room once during my confinement punishment, but I wasn’t sure if Nessa had installed new bugs in the months since then. It didn't matter to me, since I wanted Nessa to report to my uncle on my increasingly successful seduction of my husband, but this, this would spell the end for everything that I had worked so hard for.                My search was futile and I wasn’t sure to be relieved or paranoid that Nessa had simply become better at hiding listening devices or she hadn’t planted new ones. Before my spiralling thoughts could drive me crazy, Nessa and the other female buttonmen came back into my room.                “Are you alright?” Nessa asked suspiciously as her eyes roamed around the room before checking me from head to toe.                “I’m fine,” I stated in what I hoped was a bored voice. “The Alpha just wanted to make sure that I won’t become pregnant after last night and I gave him proof to put his concerns at ease.”                “I see,” Nessa said, obviously not convinced by my words. “That bodyguard of his sure did take a long time to make sure that you’re on birth control.”                Pretending that I didn’t hear the probing tone in her voice, I shrugged and went to the bouquet of flowers and potted plants that my female buttonmen had brought in this morning before Levi’s intrusion.                “I don’t question my husband’s guards, just like he doesn’t question mine,” I mused as I picked out a bouquet vase made of crystal and began arranging sunflowers and pink roses in it.                “Instead of breaking your head over useless details like this, why don’t you come over and help me with the flowers? I want this done today and everything in the Parvus’s room needs to be replaced.”                Nessa didn’t even bother to hide her disdain of my condescending words as she ignored me and plopped herself down on the couch. Three female buttonmen came over instead to help me with my preparations and I took a deep breath in the depths of my mind to focus on the task at hand.                Fate was a cruel little b***h but I wasn’t going to let its twisted joke get to me. I had promised my husband to give him an heir that he desired and I was going to keep my word. Once I had earned his trust, I was sure that my uncle would sleep a lot less comfortably at night, and that was just the first step.                “Nessa,” I commanded, “Go to the Parvus’s quarters now and start clearing it out. If anyone questions you, say that it’s the Luna’s command to improve the Parvus’s living arrangements so that she can concentrate on bearing a pup for our Alpha without having to worry about her bread and butter. And if anyone tries to stop you, well, I’m sure you know what to do.”                “I don’t get why you’re doing this,” Nessa retorted, her äss still glued to the couch.                “Uncle wants more information and influence over this pack, doesn’t he? What better way to do it by gaining my husband’s trust, Nessa? Don’t worry your little head over it. I know bonebreakers don’t go through whöre training, so you wouldn’t understand.”                Footsteps followed by the slam of the door made my lips curl up in satisfaction as I continued arranging the flowers in the vase.                Come what may, the show must go on!
