Chapter 4 – The Ashford Name

1002 Words
The council chamber was too full for a routine meeting, and Elena knew before she even sat down in the observer's seat that Damon had insisted she take that something had shifted. She'd never seen the chamber this crowded. Every elder's seat was filled, plus some standing along the back wall — pack members who normally had no reason to attend a council session, drawn here by rumors that had apparently spread faster than either she or Damon had realized. Elena scanned the room out of habit, the old instinct to map every exit, every unfamiliar face, and found her gaze snagging, briefly, on the same quiet elder she'd noticed at the coronation weeks ago. Thane, she'd since learned who his name was. He met her eyes for exactly one unhurried second before looking away, and something about the stillness of his expression made her skin prickle for reasons she couldn't name. Alpha Cross sat at the head of the long table, flanked by pack elders on both sides. Damon sat to his right, spine too straight, hands flat on the table like he was bracing for impact. Elena caught his eye once before the meeting started; he gave her a small, grim smile that didn't reach anywhere near his eyes." We've called this session," Alpha Cross began, his voice carrying easily to every corner of the room, "to formally announce the alliance that will secure Crimson Moon's future against the Blackthorn threat." He paused, letting the weight of the room settle. "Alpha Damon Cross will marry Selene Ashford, daughter of Alpha Ashford, within the season. Selene Ashford wasn't just another Alpha's daughter. She was the woman every pack expected Damon Cross to marry one day." The agreement was made between our families seventeen years ago and will now be honored." The words landed in the room like a physical blow. Elena felt herself go very still, the way she used to when she was small and trying not to be noticed by something dangerous. Damon shot up out of his chair so fast it scraped hard against the floor. "No," he said, flat and immediate. "I have a mate. The pack witnessed the bond three weeks ago. You cannot stand here and announce a marriage to someone else." " The Ashford agreement predates your bonding," his father said, unmoved. "It was made for the survival of this pack, and it will be honored for the same reason. A mate bond is not a marriage, Damon. You know the law as well as I do." "I don't care what the law says. I care about what's right." What's *right*, Alpha Cross said, and his voice dropped, went hard in a way that made the whole room shrink, "is a living pack in five years instead of graves. You think Blackthorn will hesitate to s*******r every wolf in this territory because your heart is inconvenienced? I raised you better than that. I raised you to put this pack above yourself." "Then find another way. Negotiate. Buy time. Anything but this." "There is no other way, and you know it, or you wouldn't be shouting instead of proposing one." Alpha Cross's gaze swept the room, gathering the elders' silent agreement like a physical thing. "If you cannot set aside a three-week infatuation for the survival of two hundred wolves who trusted you with a crown, then perhaps the crown belongs with someone who can. Your cousin Marcus has already offered to step in, should you prove unfit to lead." The threat landed exactly as intended, though Elena noticed, in the frozen half-second after it did, that it hadn't come from Alpha Cross at all — his eyes had flicked, brief and involuntary, toward Thane's seat at the far end of the table, as though checking that he'd delivered the line correctly. Thane said nothing. He didn't need to. Elena watched something break across Damon's face — not surrender, not yet, but the first c***k of it, the terrible arithmetic of a person realizing that refusing to bend might cost far more than himself." This isn't over," Damon said, low and furious, but he sat back down. Elena sat frozen in the observer's seat, feeling every eye in the room slide toward her — the omega mate, suddenly a liability instead of an honor, an inconvenience standing between the Alpha's son and the alliance that could save them all. Across the table, one of the elders looked at her with pity. Elena would have preferred anger. Anger meant she mattered. Pity meant they had already decided she was something that needed to be sacrificed. Nobody said her name. Nobody had to. She felt herself becoming, in real time, the problem the entire pack needed solving. When the meeting broke, Damon found her before she could even stand, pulling her into the hallway, out of earshot of the elders filing past with their measuring stares."I am not marrying Selene Ashford," he said, gripping both her hands like a vow. "Whatever my father threatens. I will find another way."Elena looked at him — at the fear underneath the fury, at a man who had never in his life had to choose between the crown he was born for and the mate he'd chosen for himself — and felt, for the first time since the coronation, truly and completely afraid." Damon," she said quietly. What if there isn't another way? He didn't have an answer for her. That frightened her more than anything his father had said in the chamber. Neither of them saw Thane watching from the far end of the hallway, unhurried, patient, the faintest satisfaction in his expression as he turned and walked away before either of them could notice him at all. He had waited thirty years for this moment. Because Damon thought the threat was Blackthorn. He was wrong. The greatest danger to Crimson Moon had already entered through its gates. He had no intention of letting a three-week bond undo it now.
