Chapter 1

850 Words
When I got home after closing a hundred-million-dollar business deal, I found the atmosphere in the house rather odd. My parents were sitting silently on the sofa, and I instinctively looked around for my little brother, Reinier Chandler. He was not there. He must still be at school and had not gotten home yet. The moment they saw me, the stern looks on their faces immediately softened. "Raver, you are finally back! Something terrible has happened to our family." Mom hugged me, her eyes red from crying. My heart skipped a beat. "What is wrong?" Dad hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Raver, Reinier… he might not be my son." I stared at Mom in shock. "What are you thinking?! Reinier is not my child either!" Mom shot back, her face twisted with fury. I narrowed my eyes. "Spit it out. Which i***t with a death wish is running his mouth that Reinier is not your biological son?" My parents then began to recount what had happened while I was out negotiating the hundred-million-dollar deal. The sequence of events was straightforward. Today, right after I left to attend the business negotiation, a shabbily dressed boy in faded clothes ran up to my parents. He was crying as if his heart would break. "Mom, Dad, you have been doting on the wrong person. I am your real biological youngest son! That Reinier is a fake! His biological father swapped us when we were born." Since then, my parents had been fretting over this all day. I got the gist of the situation. "So you just believed him? You are so gullible. Come on, transfer one million dollars to me first. Let me test just how easy you are to fool." My parents glared at me, then started explaining why they had chosen to believe the boy. "You do not understand. He could rattle off your brother's exact date of birth perfectly, and he even knows super specific details, like who the attending doctor was back then." My expression did not change. "Oh, and? A lot of people knew those details back then." "And there is more!" Mom paused to think for a moment before continuing, "Do you remember your grandma's family heirloom gold bracelet? He has it. "When your brother was just born, your grandma was still with us. She doted on him so much the moment she saw him that she insisted on tucking the bracelet into his swaddling clothes, saying it was for him to use when he got married in the future." Dad nodded in agreement. "That is right. But later, when your grandma remembered the bracelet again, she could not find it, no matter how hard she looked. She never found it right up until she passed away, and it was her biggest regret." Their words jogged an old memory. When Reinier was born, I was six years old. The nanny brought me to the hospital, pointed at Reinier, and told me this was the new little brother Mom and Dad had given me. I liked him instantly, and stared at him for ages. Just then, Dad had to go back to the company to deal with some work, and Mom was so exhausted that she fell asleep. The nanny answered a phone call and left in a hurry. I was also extremely sleepy, so I curled up in the corner by the curtain and fell asleep. When I woke up, I happened to see a man sneaking furtively into the room. He put the baby in his arms into my little brother's crib, then picked up my brother and carried him away. I rushed out immediately and saw the man enter the room at the end of the corridor. I did not leave. I forced myself to hold out until the man and a haggard-looking woman in a hospital gown went to a corner to talk. Staying out of their line of sight, I snuck in through the blind spot and swapped the babies back. I never told anyone about this. It was so long ago that I thought it was just a dream, that it could not have been real. I sorted out my thoughts. Wait, so now someone is showing up with the gold bracelet Grandma gave Reinier to claim he is my parents' real son? Leave aside whether that "dream" was real for a moment. If it was real, then Reinier is my brother, the little brother I protected with my own hands. If it was not, that is even less of a problem. It means my brother was never swapped in the first place. I pulled myself back to the present and looked at my parents. "So where did you end up putting him?" My mom frowned in thought for a second, then spoke with a guilty look on her face. "You know that villa not far from our house, right?" "What the hell?" I could barely believe my ears. "You not only arranged a place for him to live, but it is near our house? Are you out of your minds?"
