Chapter 2

Mom pressed her lips together. "He has had a terrible time all these years!" I scoffed. "What? Are you planning to acknowledge him already? Have you done a paternity test?" The two of them fell silent for a moment. "If the test confirms he really is..." Dad trailed off mid-sentence, his voice already thick with emotion, verging on a sob. I knew what they meant. They were afraid. Afraid that all of this was true. Afraid that their biological son had suffered out there for eighteen years, afraid that Reinier, the son they had raised, really was not theirs by blood. "The paternity test has to be done, no exceptions." I made the final call. "Find time to go see that man, collect whatever samples you need, and make sure you handle it yourselves... do not send anyone else to do it." "As for Reinier..." I paused for a moment, "let us keep this from him for now." Otherwise, he would probably be heartbroken if he found out. Mom and Dad agreed. No matter whether Reinier was their biological child or not, the eighteen years of love they had poured into him could not be faked. Even after we settled on a plan, Mom and Dad were still anxious. "Raver, if... if by any chance this turns out to be true, what do we do about Reinier..." I lifted my eyes and looked at them seriously. "Then you call the police if you need to call the police, turn yourselves in if you need to turn yourselves in. As for the two victims, you can figure out what to do about the other one yourselves. Anyway, Reinier is with me, I will take care of him. And perfect timing, is it not? He has just turned eighteen, so he does not even need anything from you anymore anyway." Mom and Dad's lips trembled and parted a few times, unable to think of anything to say. Just when I thought this matter would be resolved quickly, something happened at Reinier's school. They said he had gotten into a fight with someone. I was surprised, because I had always known Reinier to have a very gentle disposition. He had never even snapped at anyone before. When I rushed to the school, Reinier still had his fists clenched, his eyes rimmed red with fury, his whole face flushed. My heart skipped a beat, terrified that he had been hurt. "Reinier, how are you? Are you okay?" I checked him over two or three times, and only relaxed when I confirmed he really was not injured. The moment Reinier saw me, he started complaining. "Brother, your fiancée, that shameless Samantha Jenkins, is throwing herself at another guy!" Samantha, the daughter of the Jenkins family. She was my arranged marriage partner. We did not have any deep feelings for each other. I had only agreed to the engagement because she had made a decent first impression on me. Hearing that, I looked over at Samantha, who had a dark bruise on her nose. "What happened here?" At that moment, there was a teenager standing next to Samantha. He was around Reinier's age, but his clothes were washed so many times they had faded. The two of them were standing very close together. It was clear at a glance there was something going on between them. "Raver, your brother is a lunatic, is he not? He hits women. What kind of man does that make him?" Samantha was furious. "Besides, Josh and I are just friends! What is his problem?" Reinier's knuckles whitened as he clenched his fists again, ready to lash out with another punch straight away. "Cut the act! I saw you sneak a kiss on him! You are disgusting!" I hurried to hold Reinier back, and turned my gaze to the young man standing beside Samantha. "And this is..." The young man's attire did not look like that of someone from high society, and his every movement and manner were nothing like that of a young heir raised in an old-money family. Besides, I had never seen him at any high-society banquets before. I figured he was just an ordinary person. How, then, had the young miss of the Jenkins family come to know him? A flicker of guilt crossed Samantha's face. "He is just a friend of mine. We go to the same school, so we met by chance." Before I could say a word, Reinier exploded with rage. "Try lying again! Your mouth was practically glued to his face! I had no idea the Jenkins family's upbringing is this bad. I will go tell your parents about this!" Reinier had always hated seeing me being wronged. He had no idea our engagement was purely a business alliance, and thought I genuinely liked Samantha. Right now, Reinier was bristling with anger, like he wanted to give Samantha a piece of his mind right then and there. The teacher, who had just arrived at the scene, began to discuss a solution with us. Before I could voice my opinion, Samantha spoke coldly, "We can sort this out, but since Reinier had the nerve to hit me, he has to apologize!"
