Chapter 15 The Blood That Binds

922 Words
The revelation hung in the air, toxic and suffocating. Kaelen stood frozen, the cold slate of his eyes staring into a past that had just been violently rewritten. Everything we had fought through the s*******r in the penthouse, the debt owed to the Obsidian Circle, Silas’s brutal ambush had not been a series of tragic misfortunes. It was a meticulously crafted sequence, set into motion by the Dowager Queen herself. "Why?" The single word slipped from my throat, barely louder than a whisper. "Why would your mother want her own son dead? Why would she want you to find me?" Kaelen’s jaw worked, his knuckles turning white where his hands rested flat against the oak table. "Because my brother was weak, Nalia. He was willing to negotiate treaties with humans, to dismantle the ancient laws of the pack. My mother is a purist. She saw him as a threat to the bloodline." He looked up, his gaze fixing on me with a searing intensity. "And she knew that if I found his murderer, my wolf would demand vengeance. She counted on my rage to wipe out the Obsidian Circle so she wouldn't have to pay them." "And me?" I asked, a cold tremor racing down my spine. "Where do I fit into her game?" "You were meant to be the collateral damage," Kaelen said, stepping around the table until he was inches from me. He reached out, his long fingers trembling slightly as he brushed a strand of hair from my face. "A human cleaner caught at the scene. You were supposed to be executed on the spot to close the case cleanly. She never anticipated the mate bond. She never factored in that my wolf would choose you over pack tradition." A sudden, sharp commotion outside the study door shattered the heavy silence. Shouts echoed down the stone hallway, followed by the metallic clash of drawn blades and the heavy thud of bodies hitting the floor. Kaelen placed himself instantly in front of me, his arm shielding my body as his claws elongated, glinting sharp under the chandelier light. The heavy oak doors burst open. Standing in the threshold was not a horde of mercenaries, but a battalion of the Royal Guard, clad in polished silver armor. At their center stood a woman with hair as silver as spun glass and eyes the exact, ruthless shade of Kaelen's own. Dowager Queen Valeria stepped into the room, her velvet robes sweeping over the blood spattered across the entryway. Behind her, two guards held a bruised and bound Lily, a silver-laced blade pressed tight against my sister's throat. "You always were too sentimental for the throne, Kaelen," Valeria said, her voice smooth, melodic, and entirely devoid of warmth. "You should have killed the human girl when you had the chance. Now, you will surrender your crown, or watch her sister die." Valeria did not even blink as she pressed the blade harder against Lily's skin, a thin bead of crimson blossoming where the metal met her throat. My sister let out a choked whimper, her wide eyes locked onto mine, filled with a terror that made my blood scream in my ears. Kaelen erupted into a low, terrifying growl that resonated through the very foundations of the estate, his golden eyes igniting with a lethal light that threatened to shatter the room. Do not move, Valeria commanded, her smile remaining sharp and unyielding as she took a measured step toward us. Your wolf is powerful Kaelen, but a single twitch of this blade and your mate will be forced to bury the only family she has left. The council is already waiting for your resignation, and they have agreed that a king who bows to a human cleaner has no right to rule this territory. I felt Kaelen's muscles coil to strike, his body a coiled spring of pure, predatory violence ready to tear through the guards despite the threat. I grabbed his forearm, digging my nails into his skin to hold him back, knowing that he would be cut down before he could reach the guards. Stop, I whispered, my voice shaking as I stepped into the line of fire. Valeria turned her gaze to me, her eyes filled with a predatory amusement that chilled my soul. You are a clever little thing, are you not? She sneered, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. I looked at my sister, then at the Queen who had orchestrated our entire nightmare, and I realized there was only one way to end the cycle. If I walk away, will you let her go? I asked, my voice suddenly steady despite the absolute chaos in my mind. Valeria laughed, a cold sound that echoed against the stone walls. Oh, you are not walking away, child, she stated as the guards tightened their grip on Lily. You are going to pay the debt your parents left behind, and then you are going to fade into the history of this pack as nothing more than a mistake. The guards shoved Lily forward, and in that split second of distraction, I lunged for the small, concealed blade I had kept in my boot since the ravine. Kaelen moved faster than sound, his hand catching my wrist while his other hand lashed out with the force of a hurricane to knock the silver blade from the guard's grip. The room exploded into a blur of motion as Kaelen transformed, a massive, snarling shadow of death lunging for the Queen.
