Dawn of Reckoning

845 Words
The gray light of dawn slowly crept through the massive windows, throwing long, pale shadows across the bedroom. I had not slept a single wink. Every creak of the old stone estate, every gust of wind rustling through the pine trees outside, had me sitting upright with my heart in my throat. The heavy fur blanket of Kaelen was wrapped tightly around my shoulders, but the fabric felt less like a comfort and more like a gilded net holding me in place. I stood up, my muscles stiff from hours of sitting in the dark. I walked to the glass and looked down at the courtyard. The armored vehicles that had left in a rush the night before were slowly trickling back into the compound. They were covered in mud and ash, their metal panels scorched by what could only be magical fire. My chest tightened. The Obsidian Circle had fought back. Please let her be safe, I prayed, my forehead resting against the cool glass. Please do not let my sister pay for my mistakes. The sound of heavy, rapid footsteps in the hallway made me spin around. The ruined door of the bedroom was gone, leaving the entrance wide open to the rest of the fortress. I held my breath as a tall, imposing figure stepped through the threshold. It was Kaelen. He looked like a god of war returning from battle. His black tactical shirt was torn at the shoulder, revealing a shallow, smoking burn that was already healing beneath his skin. His face was smudged with soot, and his dark hair was wild, but his eyes were the most terrifying part of him. They were still glowing with that molten, golden flame of his beast. In his massive arms, he held a small, limp figure wrapped in a dark jacket. Lily, I gasped, the name ripping from my throat as I ran toward him. Kaelen stepped into the room, his gaze locking onto me instantly. The gold in his eyes softened slightly, but the sheer, dominant energy radiating off him was still overwhelming. He walked to the massive four poster bed and laid my sister down on the mattress with surprising gentleness. She is asleep, Kaelen said, his deep voice rough and exhausted. The witches had her under a sleeping draft to keep her quiet, but she is unharmed. I rushed to the side of the bed, dropping to my knees. I grabbed the hand of my sister, finding it warm and steady. Her breathing was even, her face pale but peaceful, completely unaware of the war that had raged around her. Tears of absolute relief spilled over my cheeks, hot and fast. Thank you, I whispered, pressing the hand of my sister to my forehead. Thank you. Kaelen stood over us, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the bed. He watched me with an intensity that made my skin hot. I told you I would protect what is mine, Kaelen murmured, his voice dropping into a low vibration. The Obsidian Circle is broken. Their sanctuary is in ashes. They will never threaten you or your sister again. I looked up at him, my gratitude warring with the deep fear that still gripped my heart. You destroyed them, I said, realizing the gravity of his actions. Just like that. They threatened my mate, Kaelen replied, his jaw clenching. They used you to kill my brother, and then they tried to use your sister to destroy you. They deserved no mercy. But what about your pack, Kaelen? I asked, standing up to face him. The warriors downstairs, the elders. They know Silas is in the dungeons. They know you burned a coven of witches for a human cleaner. What happens when they demand answers? Kaelen stepped closer, his hand reaching out to cup my jaw. His thumb was warm against my skin, wiping away the tears. Let them demand, Kaelen growled softly. I am the Alpha King. I do not answer to the pack. They answer to me. If any of them want to challenge my decisions, they can meet me in the ring. The weight of his hand was a physical promise, a declaration of absolute protection. But as I looked into his golden eyes, I knew the storm was far from over. Silas still had followers in this castle, and a pack without a second in command was a pack waiting for rebellion. You need to rest, I whispered, placing my hand over his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart. Only if you stay by my side, Kaelen replied, his grip on my jaw tightening just enough to pull me closer. I looked at my sleeping sister, then back at the beast who had burned a coven to keep us safe. I had no home left, no debt to pay, and nowhere else to run. I will stay, I promised softly. Kaelen closed the distance between us, his lips brushing against mine in a quiet, possessive promise that sealed our fates together in the dawn.
