Chapter 16 The Reign of Ash

The study dissolved into blood and splintered oak. Kaelen’s shadow surged forward, a tempest of black fur, raw mass, and lethal instinct. The silver guard holding Lily barely had time to register the air pressure dropping before Kaelen’s jaw clamped around his throat, snapping bone and hurling the armored body across the room like a ragdoll. Lily hit the floor, scrambling on her hands and knees toward the far corner, weeping in sheer terror. "Lily, stay down!" I screamed, lunging across the blood-slicked stone to pull her behind the heavy mahogany desk. Valeria didn't panic. She stepped back, her velvet robes swirling as three remaining royal guards raised their blades, forming a defensive triangle around her. "Fools," she spat, her melodic voice cutting through the snarls. "Kill the beast! The council has already signed his execution decree!" Kaelen roared, a sound that rattled the leaded glass windows and made the floorboards shudder. He didn't fight like a man with a crown; he fought like a wild predator protecting his den. A guard swung a silver-tipped halberd, leaving a burning red tear across Kaelen’s flank. Kaelen barely flinched. He caught the shaft in his immense jaw, shattering the wood, and tore the soldier down in a single, fluid motion. I pressed the small blade from my boot into Lily’s trembling hands. "Hold this. If anyone comes near you, use it." "Nalia, no!" she sobbed, clutching my coat. "We can't survive this!" "We survive together," I said, rising to my feet. Across the room, Valeria was retreating toward the doorway, her cold gray eyes fixated on me. She drew a small, obsidian-hilted dagger from her sash a blade glowing with the sickly green residue of a witch’s curse. She was waiting for Kaelen to be pinned by the remaining guards so she could drive it into his spine. I didn't think. I ran. I vaulted over the overturned table, slamming my shoulder into the guard attempting to flank Kaelen from behind. The sudden impact threw off his balance. Kaelen spun instantly, his claws shredding the man’s breastplate and clearing the path. Valeria turned to strike at me, her face contorted in disgust. "Human scum," she sneered, slashing the cursed dagger toward my neck. I ducked beneath her swing, grabbing her wrist with both hands and driving all my weight forward. We crashed into the stone wall. The dagger slipped from her fingers, clattering uselessly across the floor. Valeria gasped, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into pure rage as she raised her hands to claw at my face. Before her nails could touch skin, a massive, fur-covered arm slammed across her chest, pinning her against the wall with crushing force. Kaelen stood over us, his breath ragged and hot, his golden eyes burning down at his mother. Blood dripped from his jaws onto the pristine lace of her collar. The remaining guards lay motionless around the room. Valeria choked against his grip, her eyes bulging with venom. "You... will never... rule this pack with her," she wheezed. "The elders... know everything..." "Then the elders will burn," Kaelen growled, his voice a guttural rasp that carried no humanity left. He didn't kill her. Instead, he snapped heavy iron suppression cuffs around her wrists, shoving her hard toward the door where his loyal scouts alerted by the noise were finally bursting into the corridor with drawn weapons. "Take the Queen to the lowest dungeon," Kaelen ordered, his voice echoing down the hallway. "Chain her in silver. Anyone who attempts to speak to her dies." The scouts stared in shock at their former Queen, but the sight of Kaelen covered in royal blood offered no room for debate. They dragged Valeria away, her screams of fury fading into the distant stone halls. Silence returned to the room, broken only by Lily’s quiet sobbing and Kaelen’s heavy, labored breathing. He slowly shifted back into his human form, the deep laceration on his chest already knitting together, though his skin remained pale from the silver burns. He turned to me, his gray eyes searching my face for any sign of harm. "Are you hurt?" "I'm fine," I breathed, taking a step toward him. "Kaelen... she said the elders know. They signed an execution decree." Kaelen wiped a streak of blood from his jaw with the back of his hand, his expression turning to stone. "My mother didn't work alone. Half the council was in on the Crown Prince's murder. They wanted a puppet king, and when I chose you, they realized they couldn't control me." He walked over to his desk, kicking aside a piece of broken frame, and pulled a hidden iron key from beneath the floorboards. He unlocked a small wall safe behind a painting, retrieving a dark, leather-bound book sealed with a heavy brass lock. "What is that?" I asked, helping Lily to her feet as she walked over, still shaking. "The true ledger of the pack's elite," Kaelen said, his voice deadly quiet. "My brother kept it before he was killed. It lists every bribe, every witch contract, and every betrayal committed by the elders over the last decade." He looked at me, a dark, dangerous promise glinting in his eyes. "They wanted a war for the throne," Kaelen said, slipping the ledger into his coat. "Now I am going to give them one." A loud horn blew outside the fortress gates, sounding three long, echoing blasts the pack’s traditional signal for an immediate royal trial. Kaelen walked to the balcony doors, looking down at the courtyard below. A crowd of pack elders, surrounded by armed enforcement guards, were gathering beneath the keep, demanding answers for the Queen's arrest. "Stay here with Lily," Kaelen said, gripping the balcony railing until the stone cracked beneath his hands. "I am going to end this." "Kaelen, wait," I called out, stepping toward him. "It's a trap. Look at the perimeter." From the forest edge beyond the courtyard gates, dark shapes were emerging from the shadows. Hooded figures clad in the crimson sigils of the Obsidian Circle were moving silently through the treeline, armed with heavy crossbows aimed directly at the king.
