After dinner with all of Jade’s family, everyone acting surprisingly polite to Perrie, Janet and Carson included, they decided to head in for an early night. Both Jade and Perrie were exhausted from their day of traveling and knew that they had a long weekend ahead of them.
Neither woman had to speak to know that Perrie would have the bed by the window and Jade would have the one by the door. They barely even spoke at all as they got ready for bed. It wasn’t until Jade had turned off the lights and lay in her bed that Perrie spoke.
“I wish I could have been here with you when you got the family you always deserved.”
Perrie’s comment caught Jade off guard and she wasn’t able to supply an immediate response. Perrie didn’t seem to mind though, as she continued to speak herself.
“I got to see the beginning of it, when we were engaged. Even though you were gone for most of it, I could see your family starting. It’s a totally selfish wish, I know, but I would have liked to have been there for all those times everyone talked about at dinner.”
“I wish you could have been there as well,” Jade spoke. She thought carefully about her next sentence, but ultimately decided that Perrie deserved the truth. “I think it would have been different if you had been there though. It wouldn’t have been the same.”
“What do you mean?”
Jade turned on the lamp on the side table beside her and hopped off her bed. She walked over to her suitcase and pulled out a letter. She held it up and spoke, “This is the letter from the night before my surgery.”
Perrie sat up in bed and scooted over, patting the space beside her. Without questioning it, Jade sat down on the free space and opened the letter. She cleared her throat and read from it.
