“Laken? What…? Why…?”
My sister stood in the hallway, holding a small suitcase. Her lips twitched as if she was trying to suppress a smile.
“Surprise! I know this isn’t a joyous occasion, but…” She dropped the bag and flung her arms around me. “It’s so freaking awesome to see you.”
“Am I hallucinating? How did you end up outside my apartment?”
“Some guy downstairs held the door open.”
“I meant in Richmond. How did you end up in Richmond?”
“Oh, your boss called me and said you needed company. She even sent me an airplane ticket. What happened? You had a bad break-up?”
“Do you mean Dan? Because she’s not my boss anymore.”
Why had she sent Laken a plane ticket? Out of guilt? I backed inside the apartment because I definitely didn’t want to have this conversation in the hallw
