Chris’s POV
I felt unusually weak, my head banging. It felt like dawn came so fast, I needed more rest than I was getting.
Slowly rolling to the side of my bed, I realized my wife, Helen wasn’t there anymore…
‘Hmm,’ I could smell the meal she prepared downstairs.
She spoiled me every morning, making sure I ate breakfast in bed… if you asked me, Helen was a gift from God. I never felt so loved, not even from my parents.
“Wakey wakeyyyy babe…” Helen uttered as she came into the room, she had a large tray of food. Damn! She knew how to treat a man.
“Hey hunny, you don’t have to stress yourself every morning for me dear… a maid could fix all this up.”
Helen didn’t mind how rich I was, she did all the home cooking and cleaning. Yet she still found time to go to work, trust me I tried my best to stop her from working but she always wanted to earn her own cash no matter how little.
“Oh please! What in the world is a maid doing here when I am here, plus I’m not comfortable with some stranger staying in my house.” She said, “plus it saves us a lot of money.”
“That’s true,”
“You look kind if pale, are you ok?” with a concerned tone she asked, reaching out to my forehead and neck to feel my temperature.
Not wanting to bother her, “I’m fine, I think I didn’t get enough sleep.”
I had been feeling a bit off lately, coughing up some blood periodically but I never told her. Neither did I see the need to get checked up at hospital.
“Okay, so eat up… I don’t want you missing your breakfasts,”
I never liked eating in the mornings, it made me lazy through out the day. Well Helen’s cooking changed my mind on that too.
“By the way, I'll be leaving soon… we've got a meeting by 9.” Helen reminded me.
“Cool, hope everything is good over there.”
“Yea it is, it’s just a proposal I have to give.”
I tried getting up to get to the restroom, but then everything began spinning, I fell down and blacked out.
~~~
When I opened my eyes, I was on a hospital bed with no idea whatsoever of how I got here. Slowly turned my heads to the right and there was my lovely wife Helen, she had a magazine on here lap and was fast asleep.
It was obvious that I had been here for quite some time, I sat up and gestured to one if the nurses outside.
“What time is it?” I inquired.
“Finally you’re awake, it’s almost 3 pm.” the nurse said, “I’ll get the doctor right away.” She continued.
“Wait a minute dear, what happened to me…” I was confused, my last thoughts were somewhere around when Helen got me breakfast.
“Your wife said you lost consciousness, all of a sudden.”
“Damn! I can’t believe I’ve been out cold for that long… that’s crazy,” while I talked, the nurse swiftly left and got the doctor.
“Oh hey, Dr Rodriguez…” she happened to be a friend of mine.
“How are feeling Chris,” she questioned checking my vitals, “you are stable now.”
“Ohh Chris…” she uttered, moving closer to me and giving me a kiss, “you scared me for a moment there,” she continued.
“So I will keep you on some medication to take care of your symptoms while we understand fully what the issue is…” Dr Rodriguez told me. “Have you been experiencing any unusual symptoms?”
I paused for a while, “yes actually…” I replied.
“Are you serious?” Helen looked at me weirdly.
“Yea… so I’ve been having steady crazy headaches and weakness, but the most scary of all, I cough blood a few times.”
“Chris?” Helen called out, “and you kept it from me all these while?”
“I am so sorry dear, I didn’t think it was so important…”
“Coughing out blood is not important? Last I checked that sounds like a health emergency babe!”
“Hmm, honestly this is unlike anything I have ever seen before… so I’ll advise you have maximum rest while we monitor you.” Dr Rodriquez said, “plus the damage is quite extensive.”
“How bad? Please tell me the truth.”
“It is bad, I’m afraid we can only try our best… the prognosis seems like you don’t have much time left.”
“Can I go home doctor?” I hated being strapped to a hospital bed.
“I wouldn’t advise that so soon, but if you want I could discharge you.”
“If I don’t have much time, I want to spend what I have with those I love…” I uttered fixing my gaze on my wife.
Just as the doctor had said, things got worse over the next few weeks but I was not going to let the illness deter my happiness. I tried my best and spent most of my time with my parents, my wife and my friends but one thing saddened me.
I had no child to continue or at least keep my legacy when I’m gone, I tried my best but Helen wasn’t getting pregnant. I couldn’t get over the fact that as the only child of my family, my death would end the lineage.
Depression began to set in really fast, I had all the money and yet I could not buy a good health. Just then I began to understand why no one could eat their cake and have it, I wanted to end it all.
I tore a piece of paper out of my diary and wrote a letter to Helen, about how much I loved her and then willed everything to her.
I wanted a painless death, so I took out my pistol from the safe and slowly placed the nuzzle on my head. My hands were shaky, as tears streamed down my cheeks. So many happy memories went through my head… too bad all that didn’t matter now.
With my eyes tightly closed, I made up my mind and pulled the trigger.
