2 - Meeting With the Lawyer

1382 Words
Audrey     Right away, Jason called Destiny and asked if she had time to sit down with a new client.  As soon as she found out I was the new client, I could hear Destiny angrily ask, “Did that joke of a man hurt my friend?  I swear, I will make him pay for it!  Is she at your house?  I’m coming over right now!”     It made me happy to know that I still had friends who would drop what they were doing to help me after not being in contact with them for so long.   Although, it also made me feel a little sad to know that I would soon be leaving those friends for who knows how long.     While waiting for Destiny to arrive, Jason and I talked about what I was doing for work.  He was impressed by how far I had gotten in such a short amount of time, and that made me feel proud of my accomplishments at work.       However, I had one little secret about my earnings that I had not spoken a word about to anybody.  A year and a half ago, I started writing stories online under a pen name, and that had proved to be one of the best decisions I had ever made.       It turned out to be meditative, and it was something I took great pride in.  Plus, the income I was gaining from those stories was significantly higher than what I was making as an editor for the magazine, and that was definitely a blessing in disguise.      Sadly, Luke never asked me about my work.  Nor did he ever show any interest when I tried to tell him what was happening.  In fact, he quit showing interest in anything related to me after one year of marriage.       It wasn’t until I would start crying and begging to know why he never spent time with me, then he would show a little bit of interest.  Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for things to go back to the way they were, and I was too much of a fool to think it could be because of another woman.      How could I be so stupid to let this s**t go on for so damn long?  I saw the signs long ago, but I refused to believe Luke would do something so unforgivable.       It wasn’t until I was forced to see the big, ugly truth, then it was too late for anything.  Too late to make him never want anybody else.  Too late to walk away before I gave him my whole heart.  Too late to save myself from this nightmare.     I was barely keeping it together, when we heard a knock on the door.  Right away, Jason jumped up and rushed to answer the door, followed by Destiny rushing past him.     She had matured so much since I last saw my friend.  With her ash blonde hair pulled up in a tight bun and a light grey business suit decorating her body, Destiny looked the part of a well-respected lawyer, but her pretty, hazel eyes held nothing but compassion.     The second she reached me, I was engulfed in a friendly embrace, as Destiny gushed, “Audrey, I don’t know what happened, but I am here for you, and I will gladly take care of all the legal stuff.”     “Thanks, Destiny!  I really appreciate this,” I mumbled in response, while returning the hug.     As soon as Destiny released me from the hug, she plopped down on the couch and set her briefcase on top of the coffee table.  After going through the motions to put in her password, I heard the briefcases’ locks click before it popped open.     Getting straight to the point, Destiny pulled out a stack of papers that were clipped together.  As she spread them across the table, she explained what each paper signified leaving one, yet to be explained.     Destiny handed me a pen, then she put the last paper on top, as she professionally stated, “All you have to do is sign this one, giving me permission to speak and make decisions on your behalf.  Once that is signed, you won’t have to do anything else besides signing the actual divorce papers.  I must ask… Are you sure this is what you want?”     Tears were already pooling under my eyelids, and there was no holding them back any longer, as I pondered her question.  I had loved Luke wholeheartedly, and I would forever think about him, but this was my only option.  I could never forgive or trust him, so there was no point in going back.     Wanting to get this out of the way as quickly as possible, I jotted down my signature and dated the document, then I handed it to Destiny and mumbled, “On to the divorce papers.”     The next hour was spent going over every detail of those divorce papers.  During that time, I shed a lot of tears while telling Destiny the bitter truth about my lonely marriage with Luke.     Upon hearing about his infidelity, she urged me to ask for compensation, so I could continue living my life as I was, but I didn’t want a single damn thing from that unfaithful husband of mine, besides the joy of hearing him take his last breath.       Of course, I didn’t dare tell Destiny or Jason about those wicked thoughts.  Those would be my little secret until the right time presented itself.     While Destiny and I were going over the divorce papers, Jason got in touch with Cedric and arranged for us to meet with him first thing in the morning.  I was feeling more blue than ever, and Jason could tell, so he suggested we go out for a night on the town.     At first, I was reluctant to do anything, but between Jason and Destiny, they were able to talk me into going to the bar up the road.  Of course, I didn’t even bother to look at my reflection in a mirror before we left, opting to let my red, swollen eyes be seen by everybody.       The first thing I did when we got there was walk straight to the bar, where I begrudgingly told the bartender, “Keep the shots of tequila coming until I can’t remember why I feel so damn heartbroken.”     “Don’t you worry your little heart, darling.  I’ve got you covered,” replied the cute bartender with pretty brown eyes and a southern drawl.     I was about eight shots in and feeling pretty good, when I heard my cellphone start ringing.  I quickly pulled it out of my back pocket to see Luke was calling, then I glanced at the time and huffed.       Usually, I would have gotten home from work at least two hours ago.  That’s how long it took for him to realize I wasn’t there.  Salty about that, I rejected his call, sending him to voicemail, then I shoved the phone back into my pocket.     Less than a minute later, I heard my phone ping, letting me know I had a new text message.  I tried to ignore it, but I couldn’t stand not knowing and eventually pulled my phone back out.     After clicking the notification letting me know I had a message from Luke, I read :  I thought you would be home by now.  Where the f**k are you?     As you can imagine, that pissed me off to no end.  In a fit of pure rage over the fact that he hadn’t spoken to me in days, and that’s what he had to say, I slammed the phone down to the ground.       Without thinking, I jumped off the barstool and stomped on that phone over and over again, as I called Luke every bad thing that came to mind, attracting the attention of everybody around us.  I didn’t stop yelling at my phone until Jason wrapped his arms around me from behind and dragged me back to the counter, where the bartender had two more shots of tequila ready.       With a heavy heart, I downed both of those shots, then I stumbled toward the door, as I drunkenly stuttered, “T-take m-me to Luke’s house, s-so I c-can k-kick his ass!”
