Chapter 2 She threw herself down on the bed, disturbing the occupant beside her. Groaning, he glared at her. His eyes raked her form as a muscle ticked at his jaw. They had practically grown up together in the compound, which should have made them closer. His frustration with her only seemed to grow stronger over the years. She wouldn’t say he hated her yet, but it was close, she was sure. “You got blood all over my bed Amy. Get the hell off it.” He didn’t yell at her, but then Levi never did. She giggled and batted her eyes at him. “What’s the matter? It’s like you’re not happy to see me.” The flirtation shuttered his face to emotionless faster than anything else. The blank stare left her skin crawling. She’d never admit that to him though. “You’re just jealous I got another mission without you again.” “I could care less.” His words hit their target. She loathed the other pairs because her pairing was faulty. The two of them couldn’t seem to work together. They didn’t draw towards each other but rather repelled one another. “You’re just itching to spark something fire bug. If you were nicer, I would put in a good word for you.” “No thanks. I don’t need you. Never did. Never will. Besides, they’re only waiting for you to implode. We all are.” That did it. His words set off her volatile temper. She knew what most of them thought of her. She didn’t care. Mr. King thought she was useful. She was his favorite and that’s all that mattered. He had told her she was his number one. What did the rest of them know anyway? Levi was just being temperamental because he hadn’t set anything on fire lately. He was being denied his favorite hobby and he was taking it out on her like he always did. She needed to get him in hand. Mr. King had told her that Levi was the only thing holding her back from being perfect. He was going to fall in line whether he liked it or not. In her initial fit she had flipped to straddle his lap, not having a clear intention of what she was going to do. A broad smile stretched the skin of her face. Her sticky, bloody fingers traced his jaw. The stubble snagged the drying bits as she worked her way down to his throat. His hand snatched onto her wrist, halting her progress. He had been distracted by her gore-covered hand that he missed the danger until it was too late. She held the sharp little blade to his pulse, watching as it throbbed steadily. With a little pressure, a small bead of scarlet gathered at the tip. “You should be careful, Levi. I know where you sleep.” Content with her threat, she eased away from him. Satisfaction hummed through her veins as he released her without a fight. If he didn’t care about her, she knew he would at least care about himself. There was a little bounce in her step as she made her way to the entrance. She had barely opened the door when his voice carried over to her. “I know where you sleep too, Amy.” She turned slightly to glare at him. She was prepared to throw more threats at him, but the sight had frozen her words. Levi sat on the edge of the bed facing her direction. She hadn’t heard him move at all. That was the least of her worries, however. He had a match burning between his fingers. The flame cast a golden glow upon his face. His eyes were transfixed by the flicker. It was as if he was staring at a lover. He was reminding her of why she should tread lightly. Huffing at him, she stormed out of his room. They all thought she was the unstable one of their pair. Maybe she was, but Levi was unhinged. He just hid it better than she did. Would he make good on his threat? Would he set fire to her in her sleep? Absolutely. She had seen him work before. He would cover her mouth with his hand and press her head down until there was no escape. He’d leave her nose clear so she could breathe. He wouldn’t want to suffocate her. He would want her to feel herself burning. It was his M.O. A pair of monsters, she and him. They should be a perfect match. So why weren’t they?
