Chapter 5 She was humming with energy. Levi was clearly unhappy, but she didn’t care. They were finally beginning their training as a pair. She should have trusted that Mr. King would get Levi to cooperate. Her cheeks were becoming sore from smiling so much. She had no idea what they were going to be doing. It didn’t matter. This was the most time the two of them had spent together since coming to the compound. It’s not that she didn’t enjoy her solo work. She did. It was nice though to no longer be on her own anymore. Just because they would be working as a pair now didn’t mean the solo jobs wouldn’t still come up. Everything was finally coming to pass. Levi glared in her direction while he picked his nails with his pocketknife. If it was supposed to be intimidating, he failed. He was a fire starter. What could he really do with the tool? Knives were always her thing. She was assured that in a battle of skills, she would win against him every time. Giggles kept bubbling up her throat. The noise that leaked from her only seemed to aggravate him more. It was the cherry on top. She flitted around Levi as they waited to see what they had been called together for. It felt like a charge was in the air. Everything was falling into place. She was so busy irritating Levi that she missed the entrance of the man into the room. He was standing next to Mr. King, which was intriguing on its own. All the adults avoided Mr. King naturally. She had never seen any of them willingly occupying his company. “Hey Forrest.” Levi put his knife away and left her to walk over to the two men. Her glee died once she saw the genuine smile on her pair’s face. How dare this man interrupt her fun? She openly studied him, not caring if it made him uncomfortable. His curly blondish hair was cut close, leaving only the top of his head the only place the curls existed. His grey eyes watched her reaction. There was a lot going on behind the orbs. As if he was analyzing everything at the speed of a computer. His lower face was slightly darker in shade than the upper part of his face, indicating he hadn’t shaved in a few days. He was dressed in black and dark grey, causing him to look more intimidating than he otherwise would. The clothing was form fitting, showing off his build. It emphasized his fit figure in an obvious brag that didn’t need said. She was less than impressed with him. The fact that Levi idolized him made her like him even less. Who was this interloper that had the attention of the only two people she could stand to be around? When her gaze collided with his once again, he smirked, bringing out dimples that were not noticeable before. “Amy, come here please.” If it hadn’t been a request from Mr. King, she wouldn’t have complied. She grudgingly walked over, standing silently in front of them. “This is Mr. Hall. He’s Levi’s handler and will be training you both from now on. She said nothing in response. What could she say? If she refused to work with him, she would anger Mr. King. He had never had cause to punish her before and she wasn’t about to start now. She had seen what happened to people that made him mad before. She never wanted to be on the end of that experience. Instead, she stood still waiting for whatever was to come next. “Hello Amy. The only thing you need to know is, follow my orders without complaint and we’ll get along fine.” It grated on her that he now had this power over her. Glancing at Mr. King she received a nod in response. He had been given complete say over her. She couldn’t object. If she had been allowed, she would have taken care of him just as she had her parents. She was used to others avoiding her, too afraid of what she could do to them if given the chance. This adult was not like the rest of them, however. Her day had gone from being fun to an utter nightmare in a matter of minutes. “Take care of my girl, Forrest. I expect results with the genesis pair soon.” “Of course, Mr. King.” She had never heard their pairing called that before. She could sense there was something significant about the title but was too wrapped up in her troubles ahead. She watched Mr. King walk out of the room leaving the three of them to sort out what would happen next. She wanted to walk out with him but knew it would not go over well. This was apparently the next step in her training. At least she would be able to be with Levi now. “Okay you two, we are going to be working on your teamwork from this point on.” “Are you serious. Come on Forrest I can’t work with her. She’s unpredictable.” She waited for him to take Levi’s side. Much to her surprise he got down to business instead. “Levi, the pairs were made for a reason. You need to cooperate to avoid an unpleasant outcome happening to the both of you. You may not care about Amy’s future here, but you should care about yours.” That was the last complaint Levi had over the situation. While she still didn’t particularly like the man, she knew what he had said to Levi was accurate. Any thoughts of rebelling against his order shriveled under a determination to survive. She couldn’t be sure that Mr. King would call for her erasure she couldn’t be sure. If they had a purpose that was expected of them, they needed to make sure the two of them met the requirements. Levi couldn’t afford for them not to. It didn’t sound that she could either.
