The phone call came at 9:17 AM on a Tuesday.
Alvin was at The Cage, shooting free throws. His wrist was wrapped. His body was sore. His mind was still replaying the Vegas showcase.
His phone buzzed. Unknown number.
He answered.
"Alvin Chen?"
"Yes."
"This is Coach Bradley from Northwood University. Do you have a moment?"
Alvin's heart stopped. "Yes, sir. I have a moment."
"I've been watching you for two years. Leonard Cross speaks highly of you. Kari Cross speaks even higher. And after your performance in Vegas, the board is ready to make a decision."
Alvin couldn't breathe.
"We're offering you a full scholarship. Tuition. Room and board. Books. Everything."
Alvin sat down on the cracked asphalt. His legs wouldn't hold him.
"Are you there?" Coach Bradley asked.
"Yes, sir. I'm here."
"Michael Vance is receiving the same offer. We want both of you. You're a package deal."
Alvin's eyes burned. "Thank you, sir. I don't know what to say."
"Say you'll accept."
"I'll accept. Of course I'll accept."
"Good. The paperwork will arrive next week. Congratulations, Alvin. You've earned this."
The line went dead.
Alvin stared at his phone. His hands were shaking.
Full scholarship. Northwood. Everything.
He called Michael.
"It's 9 AM," Michael groaned.
"Northwood called. Full scholarship. Both of us."
Silence.
"Alvin, that's — that's everything."
"I know."
"We're going to college."
"We're going to college."
Michael laughed — a real laugh, not a nervous one. "I can't believe it."
"I can't believe it either."
"Same time tomorrow? The Cage?"
"The Cage. Don't be late."
---
The rest of the week was a blur.
Alvin told his father. His father cried — the first time Alvin had ever seen him cry.
He told Maya. Maya hugged him so hard he couldn't breathe.
He told Junk. Junk lifted him onto his shoulders and ran around the gym.
He told Dante. Dante screamed.
He told Kwame. Kwame cried.
He told the Observer — Maya — through text. She replied: "I knew you could do it. Now go prove them right."
But one person still hadn't responded.
The unknown texter. The gray hoodie. The person who'd been watching all season.
Alvin stared at his phone.
Where are you?
---
The text came at 11:47 PM on Friday.
Unknown: Congratulations on the scholarship. Enjoy it while it lasts.
Alvin's blood went cold.
Alvin: Who are you?
Unknown: Someone who knows the truth about you. About your "talent." About your "passes." It's all luck.
Alvin: You're wrong.
Unknown: Am I? I've been watching you for years. I know your habits. Your weaknesses. Your fears. And I know you're going to fail.
Alvin: Why do you want me to fail?
Unknown: Because you don't deserve to succeed.
Alvin stared at the screen. His hands were shaking.
Alvin: Who are you?
Unknown: You'll find out soon enough. When you least expect it.
---
The next morning, Alvin showed the texts to Maya.
She read them slowly, her face hard.
"This person is obsessed. They've been watching you for years. They know your habits. Your weaknesses."
"Who could it be?"
Maya was quiet for a moment. "Someone who played with you. Someone who felt overshadowed. Someone who thinks you stole their spotlight."
"Derek? Marcus? Trey?"
"Maybe. Or someone closer."
Alvin's stomach turned. "Close how?"
"I don't know yet. But I will." Maya handed the phone back. "In the meantime, don't let them get in your head. You earned that scholarship. No one can take it away."
"Not even them?"
"Not even them."
---
The next week, Alvin went back to school.
Senior year was winding down. Graduation was in a month. The halls were filled with yearbook signings and senior pranks and last goodbyes.
Alvin walked through the crowds like a ghost.
Everyone wanted to talk to him. Congratulate him. Ask about Northwood.
He smiled. He shook hands. He answered questions.
But his mind was on the unknown texter.
Someone close. Someone who feels overshadowed.
He looked at his teammates. Junk was happy. Dante was excited. Kwame was planning his own college path.
But one person was quiet. Distant.
Terrence.
The kid who'd leaked information to Trey last season. The kid who'd been exiled, then brought back. The kid who'd never quite fit in.
Alvin walked over to him.
"Terrence. Can I talk to you?"
Terrence looked up. His eyes were nervous. "Yeah. What's up?"
"You've been quiet lately. Everything okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You sure? Because you've been acting different."
Terrence looked away. "I'm just processing. You know. Graduation. College. Everything changing."
"Me too." Alvin sat next to him. "You know you can talk to me, right? About anything."
"I know."
"Good. Because we're a team. We always were."
Terrence nodded. But his eyes didn't meet Alvin's.
---
That night, Alvin's phone buzzed.
Terrence: I need to tell you something.
Alvin: What?
Terrence: Not over text. Can we meet? The Cage. Midnight.
Alvin: Why midnight?
Terrence: Because no one else will be there.
Alvin stared at the screen. His heart pounded.
Terrence. The quiet one. The one who'd leaked information before.
Alvin: I'll be there.
---
Midnight. The Cage.
The lights flickered. The rims were rusted. The asphalt was cold.
Alvin stood at center court, waiting.
Terrence emerged from the shadows. His face was pale. His hands were shaking.
"Thanks for coming," Terrence said.
"What's going on?"
Terrence took a deep breath. "I'm the traitor."
Alvin's heart stopped. "What?"
"The texts. The unknown texter. The person who's been sabotaging you all season. It's me."
Alvin couldn't speak.
"I know I messed up before. Leaking information to Trey. I thought I'd learned my lesson. But then you got the scholarship. You got everything. And I got nothing."
"Terrence —"
"I'm not asking for forgiveness. I'm telling you the truth because I can't live with the lies anymore." Terrence's voice cracked. "I'm sorry, Alvin. I'm so sorry."
Alvin stared at him. At his red eyes. His shaking hands. His desperate need to matter.
I know that feeling, Alvin thought. I've been there.
"Why didn't you just talk to me?" Alvin asked.
"Because I was jealous. You had everything. The passes. The attention. The scholarship. And I was still the guy who sat on the bench."
"So you tried to take it away?"
"I didn't try to take it away. I just wanted you to feel what I felt. Invisible."
Alvin was quiet for a long moment.
"Did it work?"
"No." Terrence shook his head. "You're still here. You're still winning. You're still everything I'm not."
Alvin sat on the cracked asphalt. "Sit down."
Terrence sat.
"I know what it's like to feel invisible," Alvin said. "I sat on the bench at Northside Elite for three years. Everyone called me weak. Everyone looked past me. I know exactly how you feel."
Terrence looked up. "Then how did you get here?"
"I stopped comparing myself to everyone else. I stopped trying to be what they wanted. I just played my game. And I found people who believed in me."
"But I don't have anyone."
"You have me."
Terrence's eyes went wide. "After everything I did?"
"After everything you did." Alvin stood up. "I'm not saying I forgive you. Not yet. But I understand. And I'm not going to destroy you."
"What are you going to do?"
Alvin thought about it. "I'm going to tell Rivera. And I'm going to let him decide. But I'm not going to press charges. I'm not going to ruin your life."
"Why?"
"Because you're still my teammate. And teammates don't give up on each other."
---
The next morning, Alvin told Rivera everything.
Rivera listened in silence. His face was hard, but his eyes were sad.
"Terrence," Rivera said. "Again."
"He came clean on his own," Alvin said. "He confessed at midnight. He's sorry."
"Sorry isn't enough."
"I know. But he deserves a chance."
Rivera was quiet for a long moment. "He's off the team. Permanently. And he's not allowed near any team functions."
"That's fair."
"Thank him for me. For telling the truth." Rivera looked at Alvin. "And thank you. For being the bigger person."
"I learned from the best."
"Get out of here. You have a scholarship to prepare for."
---
That night, Alvin sat in his room, staring at the ceiling.
His phone buzzed.
Terrence: Thank you.
Alvin: For what?
Terrence: For not destroying me. For giving me a chance.
Alvin: You gave yourself a chance when you told the truth.
Terrence: I'm going to get help. Therapy. I need to figure out why I did this.
Alvin: That's a good start.
Terrence: Will you ever forgive me?
Alvin thought about it.
Alvin: I don't know yet. But I'm not going to hate you.
Terrence: That's more than I deserve.
Alvin: Maybe. But it's what you're getting.
---
The next morning, Alvin woke to a text from Kari Cross.
Kari: I heard about Terrence.
Alvin: How did you know?
Kari: I have sources everywhere. Including Rivera.
Alvin: He told you?
Kari: He told me everything. You handled it well. Better than most.
Alvin: I just did what I thought was right.
Kari: That's why you're different.
Alvin: Is that a compliment?
Kari: It's an observation.
Alvin almost smiled. She sounded like Trey.
Alvin: What now?
Kari: Now you graduate. Now you go to Northwood. Now you become a college player.
Alvin: I'm scared.
Kari: Good. Fear means you care.
Alvin: What if I fail?
Kari: Then you fail. But you fail trying. That's not nothing.
Alvin put the phone down. He closed his eyes.
College. Northwood. A new beginning.
He said it again. Out loud.
"I'm ready."
He said it until he believed it.
