The Final Season

1368 Words
The calendar on Alvin's wall had a red circle around November 15. Opening night. Senior year. The final season. The last chance to prove everything. Alvin stared at the date. His body was stronger. His mind was sharper. His hands were ready. But his heart was heavy. One more year, he thought. One more chance. One more championship. His phone buzzed. Michael: You awake? Alvin: Yeah. Michael: Practice in an hour. Alvin: I know. Michael: Same time? Alvin: Same time. Don't be late. --- The gym was buzzing when Alvin arrived. Players everywhere. Coaches shouting. Balls bouncing. The energy was electric. Michael was already there, shooting threes. His knee was wrapped. His face was determined. His shot was smooth. "You're early," Alvin said. "So are you." "How's the knee?" "Good. Strong. Ready." "Prove it." Michael drove left, pulled up, and shot. Swish. "Good enough?" Michael asked. "Good enough." --- Practice was intense. Coach Bradley pushed them harder than ever. Senior year meant higher expectations. More responsibility. More pressure. "Run it again," Coach Bradley shouted. "Faster. Stronger. Don't give up." Alvin ran. His legs burned. His lungs screamed. But he kept going. Because Michael was running next to him. Because Leo was pushing through. Because Junk was giving everything he had. This is what we do, Alvin thought. This is what we are. --- After practice, Coach Bradley gathered the team. "Captains for this season. Chen and Vance. Same as last year." The team cheered. Michael grabbed Alvin, lifted him off the ground. "We're captains again," Michael said. "We're captains again," Alvin agreed. "Same time tomorrow?" "The gym. Don't be late." --- The first game of the season was against a team they'd beaten the previous year. The gym was packed. The crowd was loud. The other team's fans chanted and screamed. Alvin stood in the tunnel, listening to the noise. His heart pounded. His hands were steady. Michael stood next to him. "You ready?" "No." "Good. Me neither." "Same time?" "Same time. Don't be late." --- The game was a statement. Northwood won by thirty-two points. Alvin had twenty-two points, sixteen assists, six steals. Michael had thirty-four points, eight rebounds, seven assists. After the game, the coach from the other team walked over. "You're better than last year," he said. "We worked hard," Alvin said. "It shows." --- The second game was against a conference rival. The gym was packed. The crowd was hostile. The other team's players were physical, aggressive, determined to win. Alvin took an elbow to the ribs. A knee to the thigh. A shove out of bounds. But he didn't quit. Northwood won by eighteen. Alvin had twenty points, fourteen assists, five steals. Michael had thirty points. --- The third game was against the defending conference champions. They'd beaten Northwood two years ago. They'd knocked them out of the tournament. They thought they owned the conference. Alvin remembered the loss. The pain. The feeling of falling short. Not this time. The game was a war. Back and forth. Lead changes. Hard fouls. With two minutes left, Northwood trailed by two. Alvin had the ball. His left hand was steady. His right wrist was strong. He looked for Michael. Michael was cutting, but the defender was on him. Alvin threw a redirect — not to Michael, but to the empty space. Michael cut into the space, picked up the ball, and rose for a jumper. Swish. Tie game. The other team called timeout. --- In the huddle, Coach Bradley looked at Alvin. "Chen, you're running the show. Vance, you're the target. Everyone else, clear out." Alvin looked at Michael. Michael looked back. "Blind set," Michael said. "Everyone's expecting it," Alvin said. "Then don't close your eyes." --- The inbound. Alvin had the ball on the baseline. Five seconds. Four. Three. He saw something. Not a player. A space. He threw a left-handed redirect — not to Michael, but to the empty space. The ball slapped off his palm and sailed into the gap. Michael cut into the space, picked up the ball on the bounce, and rose for a layup. The buzzer sounded. The ball hit the backboard. Bounced off the rim. Rolled around the cylinder. Fell through. Northwood won. 68-66. --- The locker room was chaos. Michael grabbed Alvin, lifted him off the ground. Leo was screaming. Marcus was crying. Junk was running in circles. Coach Bradley stood in front of the team. "Five wins. Zero losses. Not a bad start." The team cheered. "But the season is long. The competition gets harder. We have to keep working." --- The season continued. Win after win. Northwood was unstoppable. Alvin's assists climbed. Michael's scoring averaged thirty-two. Leo led the conference in rebounds. By the midpoint of the season, Northwood was undefeated. Alvin looked at the standings. At the bracket. At the path ahead. This is what we worked for, he thought. This is what we built. --- The conference tournament was one month away. The NCAA tournament was two. Alvin stared at the calendar. His body was tired. His mind was sharp. His heart was full. One step at a time, he thought. One game at a time. His phone buzzed. Michael: You awake? Alvin: Yeah. Michael: Me too. Can't sleep. Alvin: Same. Michael: Thinking about the tournament? Alvin: Yeah. Michael: Me too. Alvin: We're going to win. Michael: I know. Alvin: Same time tomorrow? Michael: The gym. Don't be late. --- Alvin put the phone down. He closed his eyes. This is what we worked for. This is what we built. This is our time. He smiled in the dark. I'm ready. --- The conference tournament arrived. Northwood won their first game. Then their second. Then they faced the defending champions in the final. The game was a war. Back and forth. Lead changes. Hard fouls. With two minutes left, Northwood trailed by three. Alvin had the ball. His left hand was steady. His right wrist was strong. He looked for Michael. Michael was covered. Leo was sealed. Marcus was trapped. Alvin drove. Not fast. Not pretty. Just forward. The defender stepped in front of him. Alvin jumped. The ball left his left hand. Swish. One-point game. The other team called timeout. --- Northwood's final possession. Alvin held the ball at the top of the key. The clock ticked down. 30 seconds. 20. 15. He didn't pass. He didn't drive. He just looked at the defender. "You're not stopping me," Alvin said. "I'm going to try." "Try harder." Alvin rose for a jumper. The ball hung in the air. Swish. Northwood won. 68-66. --- The locker room was chaos. Michael grabbed Alvin, lifted him off the ground. Leo was screaming. Marcus was crying. Junk was running in circles. Conference champions. NCAA tournament bound. Alvin walked over to his phone. He sent a text. Alvin: We won the conference. We're going to the tournament. Observer (Maya): I know. I watched. Alvin: You watched? Observer: From my couch. I saw every play. Alvin: This one was for you. Observer: I know. Now go win the tournament. --- The NCAA tournament bracket was released. Northwood was a 2 seed. Playing 15 seed in the first round. Alvin stared at the bracket. His body was tired. His mind was sharp. His heart was full. This is what we worked for, he thought. This is what matters. His phone buzzed. Michael: You awake? Alvin: Yeah. Michael: Me too. Can't sleep. Alvin: Same. Michael: Tomorrow is the first game of the tournament. Alvin: I know. Michael: You ready? Alvin: No. Michael: Good. Me neither. Alvin: Same time? Michael: Same time. Don't be late. --- The tournament began. Northwood won their first game. Then their second. Then their third. Sweet Sixteen. Elite Eight. Final Four. Alvin couldn't believe it. They were back. One more game. One more championship. His phone buzzed. Michael: You awake? Alvin: Yeah. Michael: Me too. Can't sleep. Alvin: Same. Michael: Championship game tomorrow. Alvin: I know. Michael: You ready? Alvin: No. Michael: Good. Me neither. Alvin: Same time? Michael: Same time. Don't be late. --- Alvin put the phone down. He closed his eyes. One more game. One more championship. He smiled in the dark. I'm ready.
