The arena was louder than Alvin remembered.
Sixty thousand seats. A Jumbotron the size of a house. Lights that danced and flashed. A crowd that roared like a living thing.
The NCAA tournament. The first round. Northwood vs. a 5 seed from a major conference.
Alvin stood in the tunnel, listening to the noise. His heart pounded. His hands were steady. His legs were ready.
Michael was back in the hotel room, watching on TV. His surgery had been successful. His rehab was ongoing. His season was over.
This is for him, Alvin thought. This is for all of us.
Leo stood next to him, his face pale. "You ready?"
"No."
"Good. Me neither."
"Same time?"
"Same time. Don't be late."
---
The 5 seed players warmed up like they owned the arena.
They were tall, athletic, confident. They moved with a swagger that came from years of winning. Their fans chanted their names. Their coaches pointed and shouted.
Alvin watched them from the baseline. His stomach was tight.
This is the tournament. This is where legends are made.
Leo walked over. "Their center is six-ten. I'm six-nine."
"Box out," Alvin said.
"Boxing out doesn't make me taller."
"Boxing out makes you smarter."
---
The locker room before the game was different from any other.
Quieter. Everyone knew what was at stake. Win and advance to the second round. Lose and go home.
Coach Bradley stood in front of the team. His voice was calm.
"They're bigger than us. They're more experienced. They've been here before."
He paused.
"But they don't have what we have."
"What's that?" Leo asked.
"Hunger. They're expected to win. We're expected to lose. That's a powerful difference."
Alvin looked at his teammates. At Leo, who was taping his fingers. At Marcus, who was praying. At Junk, who was ready.
Hunger, Alvin thought. He's right.
---
The game started at 8:00 PM.
The 5 seed won the tip. Their point guard — a senior named Walker — caught the ball at the top of the key, surveyed the court, and made a pass that threaded through three defenders. Their center caught it and dunked.
2-0.
The crowd roared. The 5 seed's fans were everywhere.
Northwood ball.
Alvin brought it up. Walker guarded him — hands active, feet quick, eyes sharp.
"Sophomore, right?" Walker said. "First tournament win?"
"Second tournament."
"How'd the first one go?"
"We lost to Duke."
"Tonight won't be different."
"We'll see."
Alvin drove left. Walker stayed with him. Alvin pulled up for a jumper.
Walker's hand was in his face.
Swish.
2-2.
Walker stared at Alvin. "Lucky."
"Practice," Alvin said.
---
The first quarter was a war.
Walker scored. Alvin answered. The 5 seed pressed. Northwood broke it.
With two minutes left in the quarter, Walker drove hard to the basket. Leo stepped in front of him. They collided. Leo's shoulder buckled — but he stayed up.
The referee called a block. Walker's first foul.
Walker stared at Leo. "You're tougher than you look."
"I'm tougher than you."
---
The second quarter was a battle.
Walker scored ten points. Alvin scored eight. Leo grabbed six rebounds.
At halftime, Northwood led 38-36.
The locker room was loud.
"We're winning," Leo shouted. "We're actually winning."
"We're not done," Alvin said. "Walker is going to come out angry. He's going to try to take over."
"Let him," Leo said. "We'll double. We'll trap. We'll make him work."
Alvin looked at his team. At Leo, who was sweating. At Marcus, who was focused. At Junk, who was ready.
"One half," Alvin said. "One half to prove we belong."
---
The third quarter was a war.
Walker scored. Northwood answered. Walker scored again. Northwood answered again.
With four minutes left in the third, Walker drove hard to the basket. Alvin stepped in front of him — not to take a charge, just to slow him down.
They collided. Alvin hit the floor. His wrist — the bad one — screamed.
The referee called a block. Walker's third foul.
Walker helped Alvin up. "You're still doing that?"
"I'm still standing."
"You're going to get hurt."
"I've been hurt before."
---
The fourth quarter.
Northwood led 58-54. Eight minutes left.
Walker was tired. His shoulders were slumped. His feet were slow.
He's played the whole game, Alvin thought. He's running on empty.
Alvin pushed the pace. He threw redirect after redirect — left, right, blind — and the ball moved faster than the 5 seed's exhausted defense.
With two minutes left, Northwood led 68-62.
Walker called for the ball at the top of the key. The clock ticked down. 30 seconds. 20. 15.
He didn't pass. He didn't drive. He just looked at Alvin.
"You're better than I thought," Walker said.
"I had to be."
"You're still not better than me."
Walker rose for a three-pointer.
Alvin jumped — not to block it, just to contest.
The ball hung in the air. Too high. Too flat.
Clang.
Leo rebounded. Northwood ball. 8 seconds left.
Coach Bradley called timeout.
---
"Last play," Coach Bradley said. "Chen, you're inbounding. Leo, you're the target. Everyone else, clear out."
Alvin looked at Leo. Leo looked back.
"Blind set," Leo said.
"Everyone's expecting it," Alvin said.
"Then don't close your eyes."
---
The inbound.
The 5 seed pressed. Walker guarded Leo, denying him the ball. Marcus was trapped. The other players were covered.
Alvin had the ball on the baseline. Five seconds. Four. Three.
He saw something. Not a player. A space. A gap between Walker and the other defender.
He threw a left-handed redirect — not to Leo, but to the empty space.
The ball slapped off his palm and sailed into the gap. Walker turned, confused. Leo cut into the space, picked up the ball on the bounce, and rose for a layup.
The buzzer sounded.
The ball hit the backboard. Bounced off the rim.
Rolled around the cylinder.
Fell through.
Northwood won. 70-64.
---
The gym erupted.
Leo ran to Alvin, grabbed him, held him.
"WE DID IT," Leo shouted. "WE DID IT."
"We did something," Alvin said. "We're not done."
"The second round tomorrow."
"I know."
"You ready?"
"No."
"Good. Me neither."
Walker walked over. His face was calm, but his eyes were wet.
"Good game, Chen," Walker said.
"Good game, Walker."
"You're not just a gimmick."
"I never was."
Walker nodded. Walked away.
---
The locker room was chaos.
Leo was singing. Marcus was arguing with Junk. Alvin walked over to his phone.
Alvin: We won. First round. For you.
Michael: I know. I watched.
Alvin: You watched?
Michael: From my bed. I saw every play.
Alvin: This one was for you.
Michael: I know. Now go win the next one.
---
The second round game was against a 4 seed from a power conference.
The arena was even louder. The stakes were even higher. A win meant the Sweet Sixteen. A loss meant going home.
Alvin stood in the tunnel, listening to the noise. His heart pounded. His hands were steady. His legs were ready.
Leo stood next to him. "You ready?"
"No."
"Good. Me neither."
"Same time?"
"Same time. Don't be late."
---
The game was a war from the opening tip.
Hard fouls. Trash talk. Referees who let everything go. The 4 seed's players were bigger, stronger, more experienced.
Alvin took an elbow to the ribs. A knee to the thigh. A shove out of bounds.
But he didn't quit.
With two minutes left, Northwood trailed by three.
Alvin had the ball. His left hand was steady. His right wrist was strong.
He looked for Leo. Leo was covered. Marcus was sealed. Junk was trapped.
Alvin drove.
Not fast. Not pretty. Just forward.
The defender stepped in front of him. Alvin jumped.
The ball left his left hand.
Swish.
One-point game.
The other team called timeout.
---
Northwood's final possession.
Alvin held the ball at the top of the key. The clock ticked down. 30 seconds. 20. 15.
He didn't pass. He didn't drive. He just looked at the defender.
"You're not stopping me," Alvin said.
"I'm going to try."
"Try harder."
Alvin rose for a jumper.
The ball hung in the air.
Swish.
Northwood won. 68-66.
---
The locker room was chaos.
Leo grabbed Alvin, lifted him off the ground. Marcus was screaming. Junk was running in circles.
Sweet Sixteen. They were going to the Sweet Sixteen.
Alvin walked over to his phone.
Alvin: We won. Sweet Sixteen. For you.
Michael: I know. I watched.
Alvin: You watched?
Michael: From my bed. I saw every play.
Alvin: This one was for you.
Michael: I know. Now go win the next one.
---
The Sweet Sixteen game was against a 1 seed.
The defending national champions. The best team in the country.
Alvin stood in the tunnel, listening to the noise. His heart pounded. His hands were steady. His legs were ready.
Leo stood next to him. "You ready?"
"No."
"Good. Me neither."
"Same time?"
"Same time. Don't be late."
---
The game was a nightmare.
The 1 seed scored at will. Their players were bigger, faster, stronger. Alvin couldn't find rhythm. His passes were slow. His shots were short.
By halftime, Northwood trailed by twenty.
Alvin sat on the bench, a towel over his head, trying to breathe.
Leo sat next to him. "We're getting killed."
"I know."
"What do we do?"
"We keep fighting. We don't quit. We play for Michael."
---
The second half was different.
Northwood fought back. Alvin scored. Leo rebounded. Marcus shot threes.
But it wasn't enough.
The 1 seed was too good. Too experienced. Too talented.
Final score: 84-68.
Northwood lost.
---
The locker room was silent.
Leo sat on the bench, his head in his hands. Marcus stared at the floor. Junk cried quietly.
Alvin walked over to his phone.
Alvin: We lost. Sweet Sixteen. Not enough.
Michael: It's enough. It's more than enough.
Alvin: It doesn't feel like enough.
Michael: It's not. But it's a start. You're only a sophomore. You have two more years.
Alvin: I wanted to win for you.
Michael: You did win. You won every game you played. You won because you never quit.
Alvin's eyes burned.
Alvin: Same time tomorrow?
Michael: The gym. Don't be late.
---
Alvin put the phone down. He closed his eyes.
Two more years, he thought. Two more chances.
He smiled in the dark.
I'm ready.
