The New Threat

The text came at 6:17 AM on a Monday. Coach Bradley: Come to my office. 9 AM. We have a situation. Alvin stared at the screen. His heart pounded. His mind raced. A situation? What kind of situation? He got dressed, walked to the office, and knocked on the door. "Come in." Alvin walked in. Coach Bradley was sitting behind his desk, his face grim. On his desk was a letter. Official-looking. Legal-looking. "Sit down, Chen." Alvin sat. "We received a complaint," Coach Bradley said. "From an anonymous source. They're accusing you of recruiting violations. Illegal contacts. Improper benefits." Alvin's blood went cold. "That's not true. I've never done anything like that." "I know. But the NCAA is investigating. They're sending someone to interview you." "When?" "Tomorrow." --- Alvin walked out of the office in a daze. His hands were shaking. His mind was spinning. Recruiting violations. Illegal contacts. Improper benefits. He called Michael. "I need to talk to you." "What's wrong?" "Can you meet me at The Cage? Now?" "I'll be there." --- The Cage was empty when Alvin arrived. The lights flickered. The rims were rusted. The asphalt was cold. Michael arrived ten minutes later, his face pale. "What's going on?" Alvin told him. About the complaint. About the investigation. About the NCAA. Michael listened in silence. His face was hard. "Someone is trying to destroy you," Michael said. "I know." "Who?" "I don't know." "Could it be the same person? The anonymous texter?" "I thought that was Ethan." "Ethan was a kid. This is different. This is someone who knows the system. Someone who knows how to hurt you." --- The NCAA investigator arrived the next day. His name was Williams. He was middle-aged, gray-haired, emotionless. He sat across from Alvin in a small conference room. "Coach Chen, I'm here to investigate allegations of recruiting violations. Do you understand?" "Yes." "Do you have anything to say?" "I'm innocent. I've never done anything wrong." Williams opened a folder. "We have evidence. Photos. Emails. Testimony." "I don't know what you're talking about." "The evidence says otherwise." --- The interview lasted three hours. Williams asked questions about every recruit. Every phone call. Every visit. Every conversation. Alvin answered every question. Truthfully. Completely. But Williams's face never changed. His expression was flat. His eyes were cold. "Thank you for your time, Coach Chen," Williams said. "We'll be in touch." --- The next week was torture. Alvin couldn't focus. Every practice, every game, every conversation was colored by fear. Fear of the investigation. Fear of losing his job. Fear of losing everything. His players noticed. "Coach, are you okay?" Marcus asked. "I'm fine." "You don't seem fine." "I'm just tired." "That's not it. Something's wrong." Alvin looked at Marcus. At the concern in his eyes. At the trust in his face. "I'm being investigated," Alvin said. "The NCAA is looking into allegations." Marcus's eyes went wide. "What kind of allegations?" "Recruiting violations. Illegal contacts. Improper benefits." "But you didn't do anything wrong." "I know. But someone is trying to destroy me." --- The next day, Alvin received a text from an unknown number. Unknown: Enjoying the investigation? I hope you are. Because it's only going to get worse. Alvin: Who is this? Unknown: Someone who knows the truth about you. Someone who knows you're a fraud. Alvin: You're wrong. Unknown: Am I? I have more evidence. More proof. More testimony. If you don't resign, I'll release it all. Alvin: What do you want? Unknown: I want you to suffer. I want you to lose everything. I want you to feel what I felt. --- Alvin showed the text to Derek Cross. Derek read it in silence. His face was hard. "This is different from Ethan," Derek said. "I know." "Ethan was a kid. This is someone else. Someone who's been watching you for years." "Who?" Derek was quiet for a moment. "Someone who was there. At Northside Elite. At Westbrook. At Northwood. Someone who's been waiting for the right moment." --- The next week, Alvin received another text. Unknown: I have more evidence. Photos of you with a recruit. Emails to a booster. Testimony from a witness. Alvin: That's all lies. Unknown: Is it? The NCAA doesn't think so. Alvin: Who are you? Unknown: You'll find out soon enough. When you least expect it. --- The NCAA investigation continued. Williams interviewed more people. Coaches. Players. Parents. Boosters. Every interview was another nail in Alvin's coffin. Every question was another accusation. Alvin's reputation was being destroyed. His career was being destroyed. His life was being destroyed. He called Maya. "I don't know what to do," Alvin said. "Someone is trying to destroy me. And they're succeeding." "Don't give up," Maya said. "You've faced worse. You've overcome worse." "This is different." "It's not different. It's the same thing. Someone is trying to tear you down. But you can't let them win." --- The next day, Alvin received a call from Coach Bradley. "Chen, we need to talk." "What about?" "The investigation. I'm getting pressure from the administration. They want to suspend you while the investigation is ongoing." "What are you going to do?" "I'm going to fight it. But I need your help. I need you to be strong. I need you to be ready." "Ready for what?" "Ready to prove your innocence. Ready to fight back. Ready to win." --- Alvin hung up the phone. His hands were shaking. His heart was pounding. Prove my innocence. Fight back. Win. His phone buzzed. Michael: How are you holding up? Alvin: I'm not. Someone is trying to destroy me. And I don't know who it is. Michael: Then find out. Fight back. Don't let them win. --- The next week, Alvin hired a lawyer. Her name was Sarah. She was young, sharp, aggressive. She'd worked on NCAA cases before. "Tell me everything," Sarah said. "Every recruit. Every phone call. Every visit. Every conversation." Alvin told her. Everything. Sarah listened in silence. Her face was unreadable. "This is a setup," Sarah said. "Someone is feeding the NCAA false information." "I know." "Who?" "I don't know. But I'm going to find out." --- The investigation continued. But Alvin fought back. He gathered evidence. He found witnesses. He proved his innocence. And slowly, the case started to fall apart. Williams called Alvin into his office. "Coach Chen, the investigation is being closed. The evidence doesn't support the allegations." Alvin couldn't breathe. "It's over?" "It's over. You're cleared." Alvin sat down. His legs wouldn't hold him. "Who made the allegations?" "I can't tell you that. Confidentiality." "Can you tell me anything?" Williams was quiet for a moment. "The allegations came from someone close to you. Someone who knows your history. Someone who's been watching you for years." --- Alvin walked out of the office. His mind was spinning. Someone close. Someone who knows my history. Someone who's been watching me for years. He called Michael. "It's over. The investigation is closed. I'm cleared." "That's great!" "Whoever made the allegations is still out there. Someone close. Someone who knows my history." "Who?" "I don't know. But I'm going to find out." --- The next week, Alvin received a text from an unknown number. Unknown: Congratulations on being cleared. Enjoy it while it lasts. Alvin: Who is this? Unknown: Someone who knows the truth about you. Someone who's been watching. Someone who's not done with you yet. Alvin: What do you want? Unknown: I want you to suffer. I want you to lose everything. I want you to feel what I felt. Alvin: Who are you? Unknown: You'll find out soon enough. When you least expect it. --- Alvin stared at the screen. His hands were shaking. His heart was pounding. Someone close. Someone who knows my history. Someone who's been watching me for years. His phone buzzed. Michael: Same time tomorrow? Alvin: The Cage. Don't be late. --- Alvin put the phone down. He closed his eyes. This is what I built, he thought. This is what matters. He smiled in the dark. I'm ready.
