Caroline called at eleven in the morning. I was in the garden with Helena, who was having one of her good days and had decided that good days required fresh air regardless of what the temperature thought about that. She had her blanket and her book and a cup of tea that Mrs. Park had brought out without being asked because Mrs. Park had learned Helena's patterns better than Helena probably knew.
I stepped away to take the call.
Caroline was brief. She was always brief. The legal challenge had been dismissed. The Ward family's argument had not held up under scrutiny. The deposition, specifically the second half of it, had provided enough context to reframe the original contract in a way that made the misrepresentation claim difficult to sustain.
