“Come in,” he says in his deep voice, widening the door for me to enter.
I walk past him without a greeting and look for Lily, who is nowhere in sight, so I head for her bedroom. I’m going to tear her head off for blind-siding me like this.
When I push her door open, I don’t see her until a lump under the sheets catches my eyes. She is scared, and she has every reason to be.
I rip the sheets off her and stand with my arms akimbo. She’s curled up into a ball, and peeking through her fingers.
“What the hell, Lily!” I whisper-shout. I begin to pace.
“Amelia, I swear I didn’t know he was coming over here. He never does, so it came as a surprise to me as well. I was trying to call you, but it just rang out with no answer,” she says, making me realize that the calls were from her. I
