Leticia’s POV
Everyone goes silent. I know the head-maid might beat me to death after this, especially if those two decide I’m no longer a worthy… tribute.
Although they have to wait until tomorrow for me to turn 18.
To think that my birthday will be the worst day of my f*****g life.
I waited and braced myself for the hit, but instead, his lips turned upward into a smirk. “Nothing,” he replied. I was immediately taken aback. I expected him to blurt out why I was so inferior, and why Lycans hold—
“I’m only stronger, smarter, taller, richer, to name a few.”
I frown. That was the answer I was expecting.
“Cirrus, why don’t you stay with her while I talk with the Alpha?”
Cirrus slung his arm around my shoulders, pulling me flush against his side. Citrus flooded my senses, making my pulse stutter.
I hated how good it felt.
“Gladly, my friend,” he replies with a smile.
Kayden’s jaw clenched so hard I heard the grind. His purple face locked on Cirrus's hand like he wanted to rip it off.
For a split second, another scent hit me. I couldn't even decipher what it was, but it made something hot twist in my lower belly.
Kayden closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and then turned to keep walking.
…
Is he mad?
“So,” Cirrus began, leaning closer. “Your name is Leticia.”
I stare at him blankly. “I’m sure they gave you my file; you can ask me directly instead of beating around the bush.”
His smile widened, and even though I tried not to react to his good looks, he still made my heart skip a beat.
“Straight to the point, I see.”
“Time is precious,” I replied. “You of all people should know.”
He leaned even more, his breath fanning my cheeks. “And why is that, Letty?”
I gulped and hoped that my face didn’t turn red.
“Lycans don’t live long,” I stated.
This could go very wrong, but I love to poke the bear.
Perhaps I should go to the doctor and check myself, because I enjoy putting my life on the line too much.
Cirrus, however, didn’t get angry. Instead, he straightened, giving me space.
“You are right about that, Letty. Lycans don’t live for long, and we are always in pain,” his voice dropped, almost playful, like he enjoyed this.
I narrowed my eyes. “Why reveal your biggest weakness?”
He shrugged. “I figured if you know the truth upfront, you won’t run screaming the second we cross the border.”
“Or maybe I’ll just run faster.”
He chuckled, low and warm. “Try it. I like the chase.”
I quirked an eyebrow. Is he flirting with me?
“Any more questions?”
“The silent killers?” I asked, that was the rumor that bugged me the most.
He hummed. “That one is tricky. Do you know what power Kayden has?”
I shook my head.
“He can control air, breathing, and so on. His family used to be hitmen,” he explained.
Oh… makes sense.
“Should you be telling me this?” I questioned, I don’t want to get on Kayden’s bad side more than I have.
I still need to survive until we get out of the pack.
“Perhaps not, but it doesn’t change anything. Besides, don’t you want to know more about the mysterious Lycan families?” He questioned, the smirk on his face proof that he knew I was curious.
I mean… who wouldn’t be?
“Nope,” I replied, folding my arms over my chest.
Yeah, I’m dying to know, but my survival instinct is stronger.
“You are smart. Kayden could learn a thing or two from you.”
I snorted at his comment, and when I saw the look on his face, I quickly tried to hide it by clearing my throat.
“Are we leaving today?” I asked instead to try to erase that smug look.
“Changing the subject, I see,” he winked. I opened my mouth to refute, but he kept talking. “Yes, we need to return today, so I hope you said goodbye to whoever you are trying to protect.”
I freeze. My blood ran cold, as if a bucket of ice water had been thrown over me.
I doubt they told them about the threats they made, so how does he know?
He grinned. “Wanna know what the nickname for the Duke family is?”
I nod as an instinct.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against my ear again. His warm breath sends shivers down my spine.
“Truth holders, I’ll let you discover what my power is,” he pulled back, and I saw that victorious look on his face.
I’m sure now all flushed, red as a freaking tomato.
“You don’t know when to stop flirting.” Kayden’s voice made me jump.
I didn’t expect him to finish things so soon.
I mean, he was gone less than ten minutes!
“Done?” Cirrus asked, ignoring his comment.
Kayden nodded.
“Then let’s go, the princess over here might shift by midnight.”
Princess?
Kayden lifted an eyebrow in surprise. “Princess?”
Yeah, that’s what I’m wondering.
“Isn’t it fitting? She has my family’s silver hair, I thought she was related to the Moon Goddess.”
…
I really want to punch him.
Kayden sighed heavily. “Stop with the nonsense, Cirrus. Get inside.”
Cirrus grabs my hand and pulls me to the car, but then I feel a strong hand catch the other one.
I immediately turned, and my blue eyes met a pair of purple ones.
“You sit on the back,” he ordered.
I was taken aback. I thought that was the plan from the start.
I’m nobody important to sit with them.
I turned my head and noticed a glint in Cirrus's golden eyes that quickly disappeared when he saw I was staring at him.
“Shall we?” He said, and Kayden let go of my hand.
Again, I felt something bristling inside me, and my chest felt warmer.
My hand shot up to my necklace. I didn’t have anything to pack; all my clothes are rags.
“No bags?” Cirrus asked once I was inside the huge and very luxurious black car.
The seats here are more comfortable than the bed I slept in for years.
I shook my head. “All my clothes are rags,” I replied with all honesty.
Kayden scoffed. “Already wanting to spend my money?”
My eyebrows knitted. “I never asked for clothes. All I want is food and not feeling pain. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.”
Kayden moved the rearview. I felt his purple eyes staring at me.
Even Cirrus seemed interested in my statement, but I refused to say more.
I don’t want to remember.
I genuinely don’t.
“Very well,” Kayden muttered before turning the engine on.
The pack house shrank in the rearview until it was nothing but trees and lies.
Goodbye, Black Fang. Rot in hell.
They think I’m their shiny new toy. But once I shift—once whatever’s clawing inside me finally breaks free—I’m gone. No matter how good their scents make me feel. No matter how Kayden’s glare burns.
Freedom first. Everything else can wait.
