Chapter 5: Shadows at the Door

The intimacy of the moment was shattered by a violent thud against the heavy oak doors of the mansion. Kaelen’s body went rigid, his muscles coiling like a predator ready to strike. The air in the room, which had been warm and heavy with romance, suddenly turned ice-cold.

"Stay behind me, Aria," he commanded. His voice wasn't a whisper anymore; it was the authority of an Alpha who would tear the world apart to keep his mate safe.

I watched, breathless, as he moved toward the entrance with a grace that was terrifyingly inhuman. The doors burst open, and a man stood there—his eyes glowing a menacing crimson. He looked like Kaelen, but twisted, his presence dripping with malice.

"So, the great Alpha has finally found his weakness," the stranger sneered, his gaze flickering toward me with a hungry curiosity.

Before the intruder could even take a step, Kaelen was across the room. He didn't shift into a wolf, but his strength was undeniable as he pinned the stranger against the stone wall. The power radiating from Kaelen was suffocating, a raw display of dominance that made the very floor beneath us tremble.

"Touch her, Silas, and I will ensure your name is forgotten by history," Kaelen growled, his golden eyes flashing with a lethal light.

The confrontation lasted only seconds before Silas retreated into the snowy night with a mocking laugh, but the damage was done. The reality of Kaelen’s world was crashing down on me. He turned back to me, the ferocity in his eyes softening into a deep, pained longing. He reached out, his hand hovering near my face as if he was afraid he had scared me away.

"This is the life I live," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Danger is my shadow. Do you still want to stay?"

I didn't hesitate. I stepped into his space, taking his hand and pressing it against my heart. "I’ve spent my whole life being safe and miserable, Kaelen. I’d rather be in danger with you."
