Chapter 11 : Truths Laid Bare.

736 Words
Mercy waited at the riverbank, the chill of the evening air brushing against her face. She had asked Rune to meet her—deliberately, firmly, without hesitation. No flowers, no casual greetings. Tonight, there would be no masks, no evasions. She was done cataloging absences; it was time to confront the present, raw and unfiltered. When Rune arrived, his green eyes softened at the sight of her, but Mercy did not falter. She held his gaze steadily, unblinking, her heart pounding not from fear but from resolve. “Rune,” she began, her voice calm but unwavering, “I know there’s more you’re not telling me. I’ve seen it, felt it, and I won’t pretend I haven’t. This stops tonight.” Rune shifted uneasily, the weight of unspoken truths pressing heavily. “Mercy… I…” “No,” she interrupted firmly. “Not yet. I need the full truth. No excuses, no evasion.” He swallowed, his eyes flicking to the river, then back at her. The silence stretched between them like a taut wire, fragile but charged. Finally, he spoke, voice low and conflicted. “I… I made choices I shouldn’t have. Things I regret. I didn’t want to hurt you, but… I failed.” Mercy’s chest tightened—not from anger, but from clarity. “You’ve been distant, distracted, hiding messages, and giving half-truths. That’s betrayal, Rune. And it’s real.” Rune’s hand twitched, almost reaching for hers, but he hesitated. “I never stopped caring for you, for us. I just… got lost.” Mercy stepped back, her eyes never leaving his. “Lost doesn’t erase what you’ve done. It doesn’t undo the distance, the secrets, or the fear you’ve made me feel. You want forgiveness, but you haven’t earned it yet.” The night pressed on, the city lights reflecting in the rippling water. Mercy felt the flutter of the life growing inside her—a constant, grounding reminder that she was strong, capable, and resilient. She didn’t need Rune’s validation to claim her own power. “I’m carrying your child, Rune,” she continued, voice steady. “And yes, I want that child to have a father. But I won’t let anyone, even you, compromise my peace or strength. Do you understand?” Rune’s expression softened, a mix of guilt, admiration, and helplessness. “I… understand,” he whispered. “And I… I’ll do whatever it takes to prove it.” Mercy’s gaze remained steady. “Words aren’t enough. You’ve seen what I’ve become—what I’ve had to do to protect myself and this life. If you want in, you have to match it. Actions. Not promises.” The following days tested both of them. Rune tried to demonstrate consistency—showing up, helping with errands, giving genuine attention—but Mercy watched closely, analyzing every gesture. Her intuition, sharpened over months of observing absence and presence, would not be ignored. Kara and Adrian remained her anchors. “You’re handling this with incredible strength,” Kara said one afternoon, sipping her coffee. “Most would crumble, but you… you command your life.” Adrian nodded, his calm presence a reassurance. “Observe, act, and never let anyone diminish your authority over your own life. Even Rune. Even love.” Mercy appreciated their support. She had realized that while love was complex, her strength and autonomy could never be compromised. The pregnancy had not weakened her—it had sharpened her focus, her determination, and her ability to navigate betrayal and emotion simultaneously. One evening, Rune arrived with a bouquet and a tentative smile, clearly trying to demonstrate effort. Mercy accepted it politely but maintained her distance. “I’m trying, Mercy,” he said softly. “Please… let me in.” She met his gaze steadily, the life inside her a reminder that she had to remain unshakable. “Trying isn’t enough, Rune. I need proof. Actions. Consistency. Integrity.” He nodded, green eyes earnest. “I’ll prove it.” Mercy allowed herself a faint smile—not of surrender, but of recognition that growth and redemption were possible, if handled with sincerity. She knew the road ahead would be challenging, filled with tests, betrayals, and moments that would push her limits. But she was ready. For the first time, she felt an unshakable certainty: she could face love, betrayal, and motherhood simultaneously and emerge stronger, grounded in her own power.
