Emma By the time we got home, Sophie was nearly asleep in Jack’s arms. She’d gone all out at the Halloween party. Now, limp with exhaustion, she barely stirred as Jack carried her inside. “She’s out cold,” I whispered as I held the door open for him. Jack nodded, adjusting her weight effortlessly. “I’ll take her up. Can you grab her candy bag?” I scooped it up and followed him up the stairs. In her room, Jack carefully laid Sophie down, taking her shoes off before pulling the blankets up over her. She mumbled something incoherent before rolling over, her little fist still clutching a piece of her butterfly costume. I set her candy bag down next to her dresser, then turned to find Jack watching me. The soft glow of Sophie’s nightlight cast shadows across his face, sharpening the edges
