Chapter 14: RecompenseIt was deep night when Tarquin woke up again, startling himself out of a nightmare. He’d dreamed he was in the Kawj with Prea and Five, only this time Prea had been turned into the golem. When Five had tried to save Tarquin from her, she’d killed him. Tarquin was depressingly certain he’d have those dreams for a very long time.
The only light in the sickroom came from the few torches set far away from the beds, and the light of the moon spilling in through the window. Yehan was sleeping on his stomach with his head pillowed on his folded arms. His wings were partly open, looking like shadows in the dark. His body was a solid strip of warmth all along Tarquin’s side.
