After gently placing Nora in a dry spot, safely out of the rain and away from the fight, I returned to face Dewey. Time resumed its flow; raindrops began to fall again. Dewey’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly as his eyes scanned the space where I’d left my discarded jacket and where Nora had just been—he sensed something was wrong.
