Chapter 11

“Rica, wake up, I am here to save you.” A fainting voice was ringing at the back of my head. It was Adam. I struggled to open my eyes as bright sun was scorching my skin. The smell of sea scents was overwhelming. “Adam?” I asked softly. The sea was rough, and the boat was swaying from left to right. It was making me nausea. I tried to move my hands, but they were all tied up with ropes on a chair. I look for familiar faces but to my horror I could recognise none of them. I tried to recall what had happened last night. There was a loud commotion at the tent, and I heard Duncan yelled at the intruders. Someone has covered my mouth with clothe, and I lost consciousness. I realised I have been kidn*pped by the pirates!

My heart was beating fast, I attempt to free myself by rubbing my hands, but it was too tight. I looked for sharp objects, perhaps a broken glass or a short knife but I can’t find any nearby. “Hey girl. You can’t escape from here. We are in the middle of South China Sea.” A man with ragged shirt and coarse voice startled me.

“Who are you? What do you want?” I asked with a shaking voice.

“Don’t worry girl. We just want money. You shall call your family when we arrived at our base camp in Philippine.” The man replied.

“Why do you want to call my family?” I asked.

“We will ask your family for ransom.” Another man with rugged built and fluent English replied. He was the leader of the pirate’s crew.

“Let me go!! My mum is not rich. She will not give u a single cent!” I yelled at the pirate. “We will see.” The pirate left and continued talking to other pirates.

I must find ways to free myself. I scanned around to only see a few men drinking and chattering, their eyes were on me with a smirk on their faces as if a lion was watching at its prey. At the other corner, some of the men were busy cleaning and some were at the back of the ship’s cabin preparing food. There are about 20 odds men here. How do I escape? Where is Adam, Duncan, Elaine and Andrew? They must be still at Kudat. I am the only one being kidn*pped. I thought to myself.

“BOOM!!” A loud blast has startled me. I looked at the direction of the noise and I saw Adam and Duncan exited from the cabin’s door; they started fighting off the pirates. How on earth they hid in the cabin and not rescue me earlier? And how the two of them fighting off twenty over pirates? I thought to myself. A loud punch on the face of the pirates from Adam and a sturdy kick from Duncan. The pirates are no match for Adam and Duncan. One of pirates picked up a blade on the table and he ran towards Adam. “Watch out!!” I alerted Adam. Adam dodge the attack in the nick of time, but the blade has slide across his arm and he was bleeding profusely. Adam gestured Duncan to free me. Duncan came to me swiftly and cut opened the ropes. Adam and Duncan led me back to the cabin. “Hey! Hey!! It is a dead end!! Don’t run there!” I shouted. Adam looked into my eyes and said, “Trust me.” He held my hand tight and opened the cabin door, led me in and slammed the door loud.

We entered to another world. The bedroom was huge, and the design of the bedroom was simple yet contemporary. The bedframe was designed with black leather and the bed sheet was white. There was a table with laptop and a huge walk-in closet. Furniture was in beige, black and white in colours. My luggage was sited at the corner of the room. Why is my luggage here? I thought to myself.  This is nothing like the shabby cabin we saw just now. “Where is this place?” I asked Adam. “How is your wound?” I turned over his arm to examine his wound and stunned to find that it has healed without any scar. Adam frowned. I was puzzled, this was too much for me. The ceiling was twirling, I lost control of my legs and I fainted.

ADAM SMITH’S POV

Camping at Kudat was not easy, however, it was the perfect place to view the Milky Way. I wanted to give Erica a surprise she will never forget. Kudat was a notorious attraction as pirates like to roam and haunt the place but I was confident that I can ensure Erica’s safety. Duncan and Andrew were with me and they take turns to stay up for night watch.

I heard some loud commotion during my sleep. Damn! The pirates have sneaked in while we were sleeping. “HEY!! WHO ARE YOU??” shouted Duncan. There were too many of them and it was too dark. We fight off the pirates, but it was too late. They boarded the ship with my Erica. I will never forgive myself if anything happened to her. I just want her to stay conscious so I can be there to save her. She doesn’t know what I am and what my family does. I could no longer keep it under wrapped if I want to save her. What will she react if she knows? Distant? Afraid?

We have decided to travel back to the airport so Elaine and Andrew could take my private jet back to Michigan. By the morning came, we have already travelled back to Kota Kinabalu’s Airport by jeeps. I couldn’t sleep the entire night thinking about Erica. I know that she was safe. There was some immigration papers need to be cleared. “Elaine, please clear our travel records at the Malaysia immigration.” I told Elaine.

 “Don’t worry sir. Andrew and I will travel back to Michigan and clear their records while we on the way.” Elaine replied.

. “Wait Elaine. I will bring Erica’s luggage back to my room so she will have fresh clothes to change.” I told Elaine as I took over Erica’s luggage.

“Duncan, we should wait by at this door and rescue Erica when she is conscious.” I told Duncan. Duncan nodded his head tensely.

“Rica, wake up, I am here to save you.” I told her softly.
