            It was time for our mid-term exam. Mei Ling, Ilona and I are busy burying ourselves into books and libraries. We need to do well in this important exam to get to the next semester. Otherwise, we would be expelled or resit the entire semester. My mum couldn’t afford to let me stay another term and I know it. She has been frugal so that I could get the best education. I must do well and hopefully to get scholarship for the next term.

            My head was spinning, I felt feverish and unwell. “Oh f*ck? Do I have to get sick on the day of exam?” I grumbled. Mei Ling knocked the door and came in the room.

 “Are you ok Rica? You don’t look so well.” Mei Ling sound concerned.

“Ling, I am ok but I think I would rest for a while. You could go to the school library first.” I replied with a hoarsed voice.

“Alright. Remember that our exam is at 2pm. I would bring you a glass of water and Paracetamol for you. Remember to text me if you need anything.” Mei Ling replied. I took the Panadol and fell asleep.

            I woke up at 12pm when my phone alarm rang. I checked on my phone and received a text from Mei Ling to inform me that the exam has been postponed to the next day. How great! I could take some rest, so I could feel better when I take the exam tomorrow. I took some breads and medicines and fell back to sleep.

I have been woken up by my phone rings and it was Mei Ling. “Hello?” “Hello? Rica? Where are you? Are you alright? The exam is over. Why didn’t you come?” Mei Ling sound anxious. Oh my! I will need to re-sit the entire semester If I miss this exam. “But I received a text from you that our exam is postponed to tomorrow?” I exclaimed. “No, I didn’t text you. I was with Ilona the whole day at the library.” Mei Ling explained. “I am coming to the campus now.” I was confused and checked my phone. There was a message from Mei Ling informed that the exam being postponed but it has been deleted. Is Mei Ling trying to sabotage me? But she was such a kind and helpful friend. I went to the bathroom to get ready and rush to the campus to meet Mei Ling.

            “Ling, I received a text from you to inform about the exam being postpone.” I told Mei Ling anxiously.

 “But I didn’t text you. You could ask Ilona.” Mei Ling explained.

“Ling, you shouldn’t sabotage Rica like that. I know you are jealous about her.” Ilona explained.

“No, I didn’t. Why should I? I am happy for her. We are best friend for the longest time.” Mei Ling looked dishevelled.

“I need to see the principal now and hope that I could re-take the exam.” I told Mei Ling furiously while stomping away.

I walked pass the long corridor to the principal office. Principal door was closed, and I have asked the secretary if I could see the principal. I was allowed to see the principal after waiting for 30 minutes.

“Good afternoon sir. I am Erica Spencer taking Business Degree first year.” I introduced myself at the principal office.

 “Hello Erica. What can I do for you?” Mr. Cosby replied. He was tanned with curly hair and black spectacles.

“I missed my exam today because I was not feeling so well. Can I re-take the paper today?” I asked with my doe eyes.

 “I am sorry Ms. Spencer, there are rules in this school. I am afraid that you need to re-take the entire semester.” Mr. Cosby replied.

“Please? I….” before I could finish my sentence Mr. Cosby said “Could you please excuse me? I have a meeting.” I left the principal office feeling depressed. I sat down at the corner of the wall and began sobbing by myself.

“Hi Erica. Are you alright?” I lifted my head and saw Derrek staring at me.

“Hi Derrek. I suppose to take my exam today, but I was not feeling well. I received a text from Mei Ling that our exam has been postponed but it was not postponed. I asked Mr. Cosby whether I could re-take but…” tears rolling down my cheeks.

“Don’t worry Erica. I will see what I can do.” Derrek replied.

I followed him to the principal office. “Mr. Cosby, please let her to re-take the exam today.” Derrek instructed.

“But rules are rules. We can’t let a lass mess up our system.” Mr. Cosby insisted.

“Rules are meant to be broken. My family owned this university. I would take over this business one day. You should heed my advice.” Derrek said with stern voice. Mr. Cosby ponder for a while and make a phone call.

 “Ms. Natalie. Kindly let Erica Spencer from Business to re-take the exam. She was not feeling well today. I know. I know. Just help her and follow my instruction.” Mr. Cosby put down the phone. Derrek turn around and winked at me. I smiled at him.

“Erica, Look for Natalie from the Business Division Office. She would lead you to the exam hall.” Mr. Cosby said in annoyance. “Thank you, Mr. Cosby.” I replied with enthusiasm.

“Good afternoon Ms. Natalie. I am Erica Spencer”. Ms. Natalie scanned me from top to toes.

“Alright. Come follow me to the exam hall…” Ms. Natalie told. I returned with a smile. After the exam I went to look for Ilona and Mei Ling who were studying at the library.  I was surprised that Adam and Derrek were with them as well. “Hi all!” I greeted.

“Hi Rica. We were trying to find out what happened this afternoon.” Adam explained.

“Babe, I really didn’t text you any messages. I am sorry. I don’t know how to explain this.” Mei Ling replied with distressed. Adam glared at Ilona with anger.

“Ilona. Did you send that text to Rica?” Adam asked Ilona.

“No. I didn’t. It was Mei Ling.” Ilona looked nervous; she was fidgeting.

“Don’t lie to me!” Adam yelled. Everyone at the library was staring at us. Derrek pulled all of us out of the library and asked Ilona.

 “Why do you do this to Erica? She might be expelled for this.” I am confused. Is there anything that I missed? Ilona was silence about it. Why the guys keep pushing her?

“Sorry Rica. It was me.” Ilona told. “Huh? Why? How?” I asked.

 “I was with Mei Ling this afternoon. I took her phone when she went to the bathroom. Her phone wasn’t lock so I used her phone to text you that the exam has been postponed. I don’t know what came over me. I am jealous that Adam likes you, not me. I am more beautiful than you and I know him for so long. Why not me? I thought to get you expelled so you won’t be hanging around Adam anymore.” Ilona explained and begun to sob. I was stunned by her revelation and lost for words.

ADAM SMITH’S POV

I could feel her sorrow. What had happened to my beloved Erica? I called Derrek to check on her as I was occupied by an important collection. Derrek explained to me after he resolved her problem. I rushed to the campus after I finished the collection and confronted Mei Ling and Ilona. I read into Mei Ling’s mind to realised she was innocent. Erica arrived at the library looking so innocent and sweet. I was confused, and I read into Ilona’s mind. She was the one who texted Erica. How could she? I wished I could punish her with our rules.
