49. The Envelope

Molly The heater hums softly in the corner as I lean back against my desk, phone propped up between a stack of patient files and an empty coffee cup. Snow is curled up on her favorite blanket near the radiator, fast asleep after spending the better part of the morning terrorizing the clinic. She knocked over a box of gauze, stole a rubber glove, and tried to make off with a squeaky toy meant for anxious puppies before finally exhausting herself. Yeah...I should have just left her with Lily. I miss Lily badly. Amber’s face fills my screen, curly brown hair bouncing as she gestures wildly from her bed. I can already tell she’s worked up. “So tomorrow,” she says sharply, “you’re telling me you’re walking into court to fight a bunch of rich vultures who stole oxygen at birth.” I snort.
