15We got the change of weather that the hoopoe had predicted. It became freezing cold and the trail got steeper and slippery as a glistening snow began to fall. I was sure there was a word for snow like that, but as a California girl, I never learned it. “All the tourists have gone home,” said Lama. “We must hurry before the days get shorter.” Lama made us walk faster and faster, as we slipped and slid in muddy snow for what seemed like hours on end. My socks were miserably wet and I was gasping for air. This was not the fairy tale forest that began our trip, this was not the rolling hills and pastures of yesterday.
