At first I wasn’t sure I heard the scream and the thud – what between the grinder and the kettle getting into full steam – but I stopped and listened. Nothing. As I was about to resume grinding, Jenny thudded down the stairs and skidded into the kitchen, her face ashen as she leaned against the refrigerator for support. “What?” I asked. The woman gulped reflexively and shoved bits of loose hair behind her ears. “I saw something!” My first response was to laugh. “Rubbish.” “I’m not making this s**t up!” Jenny pressed a hand against her chest, still heaving for breath. “Don’t talk kak.” I was smiling now. “I’m not talking kak!” Her eyes were so huge I could see the whites all the way around her irises.
